Hello all,

I'm looking for some feedback from those who've used some sort of bolt-gun chassis with an AR carbine stock... In the past I've seen several such offerings but kind of blew past 'em, thinking 'why would I ever want something like that?'. Well recently I saw some pics of a particular chassis (MDT LSS) that is light weight and actually looks pretty good w/ a carbine stock on it.... got me thinking that it might make for a dandy compact little 'yote gun or something for the (grand) kiddies to shoot, etc.

Most of my (limited) experience with AR carbine stocks has been with the standard GI 6-position collapsible stocks, so I freely admit I probably don't know a whole lot about what is out there beyond flipping thru a Brownell's catalog, and what actually works well with a bolt-gun chassis in terms of cheek weld, setup in a rear bean bag, etc. About all I do know is that the text with the pics I saw said that one had a Magpul CTR with some kind of cheek riser on top.

Anybody willing to share their thoughts on the matter, what works for you, etc.?

TIA,

Monte

I owned 3 of the MDT TAC 21s over the years and have an LSS sitting here in the box. I find them a little light with a longer barrel- same with the PRS. If you stick a #7 25" on a gun and think a 6 pos MOE is going to balance the rifle you are in trouble. On the other hand, with a shorter/lighter contour, it should be serviceable.

Since there is no charging handle, you can freely add cheekpieces as well

I was pretty much planning on something like a Savage Heavy Sporter, Light Varmint or Varmint contour, about 20" for 6.5CM. Then again, Gunshack has a 16.5" McGowen 300 Blackout barrel that combined with this chassis, a nice light titanium can like the Gemtech Sandstorm I'm waiting on the stamp for, etc. should make a *very* nice short range 'yote whacker ;)

The thing that was concerning me with the various carbine butt stocks is whether the cheek piece risers will go high enough, or far enough forward, for proper head position on a bolt gun.

I have a mcree chassis. I bought the ar style setup because I thought it would be nice to quickly adjust to different lengths for different shooters to use my rifle and it was quite a bit cheaper than the fixed stock version. After shooting it for 3 months, I decided I hated the ar buttstock, I mostly shoot prone and in that position the recoil pad was way too low for me, like under my armpit basicly. I used magpuls moe and str stocks because I already had them, the moe cheek weld was nice with a short cheek rest and my egw rail, low rings...the str was a chin weld special. I bought the fixed rear from mcree and I love it. Set it up for my shooting style and it is now my favorite rifle to shoot.
