Hey guys, I was browsing through the Brownell's web page and found cartridge sealant for sale. I was wondering if anyone had any experience using it. In particular I was wondering how it is used. Is it thin enough run along the edges of the primer and bullet? I appreciate your input.

Re: Cartridge sealant, any experience?

I don't know what sealer Brownell's is selling today but I do know that most such stuff is simply women's nail polish. It works fine but so does doing nothing.

Re: Cartridge sealant, any experience?

Long article years ago in "Handloader" magazine. Short reprise: For the primers, use polyurethane enamel. I use a dark color to tell when it is done. Fill a empty fingernail polish bottle with the stuff. Dot it onto the loaded ammo base on the primer, and let it spread into the groove. I do a whole block at once, then wipe the excess off with a paper towel. The reason I say loaded ammo, is that when you seat the bullet you compress the air inside it and the air escapes around the primer. Let the loaded ammo sit for a day or two to decompress, then coat the primer. If done too soon, you'll get bubbles. For the bullet: if lubricated lead bullets, no sealant needed. If jacketed then use what the military does...asphaltic varnish. Sold in garden supply stores as pruning sealant. Get the paint on, not the spray. Take the empty, primed cases and coat lightly the inside of the case necks using a Q-Tip. Allow to dry for a couple of days. Charge the case and seat the bullet. It forms a "washer" around the bullet inside the case neck. Then do the primer. It will degrade accuracy. But increases water resistance.

Not to belittle the topic of discussion, but are you planning on swimming with ammunition? Even in a torrential downpour I think the chance of contaminating powder charges is pretty small...I think this is just an OCD precaution to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

No I was not planning on swimming with my ammo. I was just curious as it is an aspect to reloading I haven't encountered. The only sealant I have ever encountered was on surplus ammo and it looked like a messy job. I also kind of wondered if accuracy would be affected. Thanks for the input guys.
