Case Overall Length w/BTHP

I'm currently working on verifying all of the bullets I use on each of my rifles with the following method (http://www.longrangestore.com/Cartridge_Overall_Length_Gauge_p/70065887.htm)

All of them are coming in close to what the factory spec is suppose to be. However when I tested a Hornady 168gr BTHP I am getting a COL of 3.3860, which is approx 0.146" over spec. I've remeassured 4 times now and every time I'm getting 3.3860. Is this because it's sitting much further into the lands?

This isn't a rifle that I'm using a magazine for so fit into a magazine isn't a big deal. However this seems a bit excessive.

I may have stated my question wrong in the first post.

Things known:
30-06 brass length = 2.484" (SAAMI spec)
Hornady 168gr BTHP Case Overall Length = 3.240" (based on Hornady reloading manual)

Things being tested:

Using method in link above to test the length when bullet is seated into the lands. I get 3.3860" on this method.

Question:

For the specific rifle (savage 111fcns 30-06) am I doing something wrong with this testing method or is there something different that is causing me to get an excessive length measurement for this specific bullet?

Likely what you're seeing is the difference in secant ogive (amax, some if not all hornady bthps, and vlds) and tangent (smk and most hunting bullets) ogive. It is a longer sleeker shape so more of the bullet is forward of where it contacts the rifling.

When a guy corrects your grammar and is not obviously being an ass it is probably because your usage makes your question confusing, and yet you continue to say case when it only makes sense you mean cartridge. COL and COAL refer to cartridge, the combination of case [brass] and bullet [projectile].

Deformations of bullet tip from manufacturing or packaging can contribute to the variations.

The book values are only approximations

What I'm trying to accomplish is to establish a baseline for each of my rifles for each of the bullets I use to find out where it sits into the lands.

From the reading I'd done, it sounds as though each rifle is different and each bullet can be different as well. As I'm working on squeezing as much accuracy out of my reloads, one item I'd read about was knowing where the bullet sat into the lands and then backing it off .010" and seeing what it did for the accuracy of the load.

As I'm still working on the verbage of all the various items, I'll take things in stride. I've just been on too many forums where I'll get a one line answer that is typically a "f**k you"
