In looking through my loading manuals I find 308 case length
@ 2.015. I have fired cases that range in length from 2.019
down to 2.000. Being the mandrel in the center is desighned to sit on the top of the case neck, should I trim all cases to
the original length of 2.015 and not worry about the shorter ones???? Just aquired two new sets of X dies and need a little info.

2.015" is max case length. If you are going to trim, I would trim to 2.005". If it is a factory rifle, you should be ok to go a few thousandths over the 2.015". If the 2.019" case chamber fine, then you should be ok. Check it after sizing these cases. I don't know about the X die, and case trimming or not.

Thanks caustic
I am new to X Dies and had hoped some here were also useing them and knowing how they are supposed to work could give me some views. The center manderal has a shoulder that tightens
down on the end of the neck to stop the growth. the manderal must be set to the longest case what ever the trim lenth is.
My question is do I set it to original length of 2.015 and trim all cases to that length or should I trim all cases to
trim length and hold them there or somewhere inbetween.

Re: Case trim length for X dies

your dies may be newer but my older instruction sheet reads: "<span style="font-style: italic"> All cases must be sized and trimmed to same overall length. For best results, full-length size each case and trim to 0.020 under maximum case length". This is a " one-time only" preparation..</span>.."

I show 308 max length is 2.0150 - 0.020 = 1.995
In practice I trim to 2.000 that first time, and then I don't need to trim again.
