My take away is that in the wake of Globalism bullshit being jammed down the world's throat while simultaneously jammed up it's ass independent Nationalism is on the rise . Catalonia appears to be the economic Texas of Spain . Actually one fifth the GDP . Spain started this by reviewing and declaring portions of Catalonia's Autonomy agreement illegal and unconstitutional . The agreement is post Franco and roughly eighty years old . Looks like Spain and EU trying to fuck Catalonia .
No shortage of fuckin people over in the world . Shitbags be a plenty . But this global nationalism is gonna cause sparks and eventually this shits gonna burn again like WWI and WWII . Funny how Germany seems to be the economic and idealogic seat of the EU . Little coinka dinky there huh . Bildaberg .Hmmm .Wonder who the European Soros' are .

That's fucking fascinating. Franco died 42 years ago. If it's post-Franco, how is it almost 80 years old?

Spain has had a system of fueros for hundreds of years. Under them, and under administrative processes taking their place, varying amounts of autonomy have been accorded to different communities, including Cataluña, which became part of the Spanish political construct when Aragon and Navarre were tossed into the mix with Castille/Leon.

2018 is filling up rapidly. I might have to hold off on fleshing this lecture series out until 2019.

Note that they're appealing to Europe ... as Europeans. The separatistas don't give a shit about Spain, and some of them are as bad as ETA.

Well, it got suspended back in 1714, too, but there's an awful lot of history to consider in Spain and in its component communities.

I spent 5 years as the USMC Attache to Spain in Madrid, my family comes from Northern Spain (Basque) and my wife is from Madrid and her whole family is there.

Quite simply: The liberal far left in Spain has for years used the "secession" card to extort money from the central government in Madrid. Just like here the populous over the years has bought into the the bullshit socialist line not unlike our far left believing their own bullshit here (and now we have ANTIFA, BLM and California talking secession) and the chickens are coming home to roost. They have made a grave error by "sniffing their own farts" and liking it.

There will be jail time for the politician leaders and some minor riots like we have seen here, but the majority of people in Catalonia believe they are Spaniards and this too will pass.

I almost got into it once in Port Bou, when someone overheard me in a cabina, saying that I had just gotten off the train "in Catalunya." In my left ear: í PUTO, ESTÁS EN ESPAÑA !

Hopefully, everything will settle down, but the Benemérita has a long memory, and a lot of the Mossos d'Escuadra are said to be spoiling for a fight.

So enlighten me Sihr . Am I on the wrong side of this . Is Catalonia a bunch of European Commifornians .

    Who cares? It's Spain?

    I have no idea.

I will say (and this is from a statistically-significant group of one...) back in middle school, I had a Spanish teacher who was a really creepy dude from Guerinca. He survived the bombing, in fact. But he was creepy. And probably a cornholer. Whatever. That was in the late '70's and teachers were allowed to be weird then.

We had a kid in our class, though, whose parents were from Catalan. He was a fluent Spanish-speaker. But apparently spoke with a Catalan accent. I didn't know the difference. I only knew things like "Taco and Chalupa and Speedy Gonzales." Yo no Hablo... mucho. At least not that I'll admit.

But this teacher used to absolutely RIDE our classmate and make fun of him and beat up on his 'Catalan' accent or dialect. Referred to him, every time he came into the classroom, as "Catalan." Really. "Hey Catalan, Buenos Dias.... "

So there must be some kind of Spanish prejudice to Catalan in the same way as Americans tell Polish Jokes or Canuckians tell "Newfie" jokes. This 'memory' re-surfaced when I kept hearing about Catalonian independence. My correlation of the two may have NO basis in reality. But it was a very distinct memory of growing up. And a 'question' that apparently lurked in my lizard brain waiting to be awakened for 4 decades!

Beyond that... no idea. As far as I am concerned, the only worthwhile parts of Spain are Eibar (where they make beautiful guns) and Operto (where they make tasty and very snobby fortified wine.) The rest of the place... as far as I am concerned, Franco could have shot them all. What did they ever do for me?

    Cheers,

    Sirhr

Only some of the Mossos want a fight........but all of the Guardia Civil want one and if that isn't enough; Rajoy will unleash La Legion. "Cara al sol"

Last I checked Operto was in Portugal. And it is really important.....Moron is a key base for us, where the US Marines have their rapid reaction force and the Air force needs to stage for ANY major operation in the deserts. Rota is the kicking off base for the Mediterranean fleet, so yeah, it does matter.

I'm going to hang my head in shame and go drink some fortified wine.... Well, more fortified wine, apparently.

But Eibar is still in Spain... so there. Unless you listen to the Basques. Then it's not in Spain. It's in Basqueerbia... Or something like that.

Sorry Chorizo... You are right on! My bad.

Planning on motorcycling through Basquerbia (whatever) next year... on my way to Iceland. Ferry from UK to Northern Spain/Basque country.

Yes, that's a long way around. But before I head to Denmark... going to hang out for a week with Martin Pegler talking up sniper history, kicking up battlefield residuals and shooting Vickers... and he is between Basque country and Denmark. Sort of . As you mentioned, the gunmakers are almost all gone... and noone gives tours. But at least stopping and walking the streets will be fun.

Have an awesome day, Chorizo! And, yes... The Basques are utter masters. I have seen some of your guns in Vintage. You and I are cut from the same cloth and you have some way, way better Spanish guns than !. Which is a good thing! The Basques are master craftsmen on par with anyone on the planet. And since they apply that skill to guns... they are on my 'amazing human beings' list!

Oh and Veer... lo siento, mi Espanol es realmenta malo esta noche, Jefe.! Continua, amigo...

Dog, you'd go crazy trying to throw your head around the whole thing. It isn't just Catalunya's relationship with Spain as a whole, but their relationship with other provinces. They accuse Madrid of oppressing them, but they, in turn, have been hard on other communities.

Consider blaverismo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaverism The Valencians (some of them) and the Catalanes at each others' throats over cultural and linguistic inroads in the "little brother" Valencian culture.

When I had to brief senior level officials who came to the Embassy on Spanish Politics (I went to the Spanish Naval War College before becoming Attache so I was always tasked with the job with senior visitors) I use to ask the "Do you want the "Your Head will Explode Truth" or do you want the "Whitewashed, enough to get you out of here without embarrassing yourself" brief?

They invariably took the latter as the former usually required 4 or 5 bottles of Rioja wine to even get your mind right. You just had to be one with the culture, Luke.

I also explained that if they could understand the comment "Me cago en la leche" they were starting out just on the right footing.

Not really. It is like ordering a meal in Spain......bread is always understood to be part of the meal, but never mentioned.

As for Franco and his boot........It looks like another foolish americano has bought into the communist/rojo propaganda about Spain again. How many fail to understand that the "Lincoln" brigade was funded, led, and organized by the Soviet Union and the catalan separatists are nothing more than a political extension of the same far left terror group Terra Lliure, when it disbanded in 1990's.

The IRA, ETA, and Terra Lliure were all receiving their training and funding from the Soviets/Russia and subscribed to the same Marxist theology. But for many it is simply more romantic and less taxing mentally to believe the socialist propaganda bullshit, I guess.

Simple Punch and Judy show theatrics are more easily sold and understood by some. Complex dynamics in a place the size of Texas, not so much. I had an A.B.D. Spanish MA once in a course on Almodóvar who had spent all of her time in Tarragona, much like one of the blind men at the zoo seeing the elephant. That, to her, was Spain in its entirety, and she was entirely skewed. One line in a movie exposed the shallowness of her preparation: "por falta de maldito parné." No amount of convincing could make her understand something outside her elephantine back left foot conocimiento, that this was a Gypsy expression for lack of money. Not in her experiential set, not in her schema, no, no, no way, as if chorizos had to be some sort of misbegotten butifarras. As you said about "me cago en la leche" ...

Yeah, an Americano who lived under Franco, witnessed the scourge of ETA bombings firsthand and have Catalan relatives...Who work harder than anyone I know in Spain...or the U.S. For that matter... and I'm a fervent anti-communist
WTF does the Lincoln Brigade have to do with 21st century Catalan attempts to realize self determination?
The world is many shades of grey.
