What kind of stencils are you guys using for cerakoting. I'm having problems with the corners wanting to to peel away from the stock when it's in the oven which leads to some blurred edges. Am I doing something wrong or just using the wrong stencils. I'm gettting mine from brownells. Any suggestions will help alot.

I haven't tried the air cured yet, mainly because I have alot of the oven cure an I heard they are different shades.

Summitsitter,

Here are a few examples of stocks/rifles that I coated using "C" series (air cure) Cerakote.

I used blue tape to make my stencil patterns.

I understand wanting to use product on hand, but Cerakote may not be the best way to go with stock work. I would suggest looking into polane.

Re: Cerakote stencils???

I've used the Bulldog stencils and have had some pretty good luck. They make an oven cure high temperature version but you still have to be careful with the heat. I would love to know if anyone makes paterns that's a little more durable.

On a side note, the Bulldog stencils that give the most trouble are the digital I suppose because of the sharp angles.

I haven't seen a set of these Brownell's stencils, but perhaps you can duplicate them in the high temperature tape that NIC sells?
The sell it in many widths.

It would be a lot more work but it would not exhibit the curling that you describe.

We use that tape at work to keep powdercoating off areas that aren't being coated. It'll withstand several heat cycles at 400 degrees, but it sticks like a motherfucker. I wouldn't use it on a fresh finish, it may pull some of it off.

I use a premium vinyl when I do Cerakoting stencil work and I've never had a problem with my vinyl peeling or not sticking.

Re: Cerakote stencils???

I don't have any files, if you can throw somthing together that would be great. Need the normal random small squares and angles with some larger "blotches." If you've got anything already worked up or pics of the finished job you can email me at [email protected] or post them on this thread. Next weekend I'll be spraying another batch.

Re: Cerakote stencils???

Bulldog Arms has some stencils. My experience with Excorio using them on my recent build is that he ran into two problems:

1) Because they are linear rather than using a slight curve, if your barrel tapers, the person using them will have to be careful that they don't encroach together over the length of the barrel in order to get them to apply flat.

2) Humidity sucks. The area applying them needs to be dry. In ohio that may mean using a fan and heater or air conditioner to keep a specific area dry. Otherwise the edges peel and you lose that crisp line that you got the stencil to apply in the first damn place.

Re: Cerakote stencils???

I've had some good luck with Bulldog on some suppressed pistols I did in tiger stripe, but I've experienced problems with almost every digital pattern because of the peeling. Humidity is a bitch! It's been damp and rainy here all summer and the shop is right along the susquehanna river. Great for smallmouth, baaaad for Bulldog stencils!

Re: Cerakote stencils???

Definitely, I'll finish the design in the morning. I just finished two other projects today so now I have some breathing room. I'll send you a PM with the design image tomorrow and then give me an address and I'll get them out free of charge.

How big of a sheet do you need?

Re: Cerakote stencils???

Sounds great Rich, I've got 2 870's to do in digital. I do need a healthy sized piece. I do a lot of jobs, if your patterns work out I'd gladly buy from you on a regular basis.

Have you ever tried the old chocolate chip desert pattern?
