Yep, Varget was tits for me in the 47L. RL16 is getting some traction but mainly in the larger capacity of 260, XC, and 6.5CM. RL17 is accurate and fast but it is hard on barrels and temp sensitive. 4320 looks good on Quickload. BLC2 looks like a boss on QL and has a rep for accuracy, but....it's temp sensitive. RL15 was an early favorite of 47L shooters but like most Reloader powders is very temp sensitive. VV N540 is similar to Varget, just costs more. I always thought 8208 would be good in 47L, maybe a bit fast, but it has very small stick kernals which should meter well, has a rep for not being that temp sensitive, and saw on the internet somewhere...
....that it is not as hard on barrels as Varget. IMR 4166 is supposed to be some kind of equivalent to Varget and only slightly less temp stable, BUT I guess it's made from small-batch, organic, grass-fed unicorn farts b/c they want a ridiculous sum for it when you can find it. [ Come on IMR...know your place! ] I use CFE in 6.5 Grendel b/c it is a good burn rate for it and mostly b/c I had 8lbs somehow and have to use it. It is temp sensitive tho so watch out for that. If you wanted to use a temp sensitive ball powder I'd recommend BL-C2.
Here is a list of characteristics I would look for in a powder, in order of importance:
1. Temp Sensitivity - Does no good to develop a good load if it turns into high pressure or speeds up/ down out of your node with the passing of the weather
2. Accuracy - is king
3. Harshness on barrels - just discovered this recently. got a killer load and it only lasted 600 - 800rds bc my throat eroded so much
4. Speed - b/c it does kinda matter
5. Availability - I refuse to try cocaine b/c I hear it is highly addictive, pricey, and shooting is already expensive enough. Likewise, I can't bring myself to develop a good load with my last 10lbs of H4350
