Can a barrel in 223, be bored out and rifled in lets say .243? Or 243 to 284? I am just wondering what to do with a high quality barrel once its shot out. How deep are common Lands and Grooves. Thanks in advance, I apologize if this is a dumb question!

Re: Changing a barrels caliber?

Yes, you can have them rebored to a larger caliber. Rifling grooves are generally .003-.005" deep, so what you propose is quite possible. There aren't a lot of people who offer this service, and they tend to have a large backlog of work. I've never had a barrel rebored, but the possibility does stay in the back of my mind for a couple of different applications.

Don't waste the time or money. Get a new barrel.

I think it is kinda common in Resto's of leaverguns (same caliber updates). To get a quality job done you could just order a new barrel for about the same price but then you wouldnt have the original roll marks on the barrel.

Check Classic Barrel Works in Prescott AZ, seems like if you already have a custom barrel that cost in the $300 range, you will be able to save some money by having them re-bore it. I wouldn't advise re-boring a factory barrel unless as suggested above, the factory roll-marks are worth something in-tact.
