give it a shot and post a synopsis of the gear / weight / relative comfort

for me it will be -16 F with 19mph wind - a little colder than I have tried

put this on hiking forum also

We went out on New Year's Day, when it was much warmer than today's forecast. The temperature was about 12F, with a gentle 3-5 MPH breeze. I went with a Carhardt coat, hoodie, and long-sleeve thermal shirt up top, and thermal underwear under Duluth Trading Co. pants. Some wool socks and insultated Red Wings boots rounded things out. I shot using a pair of cheap insulated mechanics gloves, and went with some thicker Gordini gloves when spotting or moving targets around the range. An extra foam pad was thrown under my normal shooting mat to provide an extra layer of insulation. The results on paper and steel were what I'd expect during warmer weather, but I think this was right about the point where things would go downhill rapidly if conditions worsened ever so slightly.

It should be noted that the equipment didn't care one bit about the weather. Heck, I even used the same dope that I'd collected on a day that was 60F warmer, and it worked fine out to 500m. Here are a couple of AIs in their natural environment:

ok, ended up doing this last night:

the low was -10 with light winds

used a full and a short thermarest

bivy

-20 sierra design 800 fill bag

base layer, fleece layer, insulated pants, down jacket with the zip off sleeves over the feet, base layer gloves and down mitts, face shield over the nose

kicked out a trench in about 7 inches of snow

was out for about 7 hours, was fully warm and estimate this would be true for another 5 degrees and some more wind

certainly this system would be reasonably comfortable to - 25 and keep one alive overnight to - 35

no big issues with condensation / frost as I try to expel my breath outside the bivy

some cold spots on the feet when they were pushing outward/ compressing the insulation - felt no cold spots from the ground
