Hey guys, I just sold a couple of rifles and have found 2 used rifles that I like. They may be sold by the time I get the transactions complete but heres my delima.

One is a stiller predator 6.5x47 (22" barrel)and the other is a defiance 7mm wsm (26" tube). Both have dbm systems, threaded for a break/suppressor, yada yada you get the point. Both around same price.

I have just sold my 6.5x47 lapua so a little familiar with the round. But the 7mm wsm is new to me I like the ballistics of the 7mm. I know the 7 is gonna recoil more, but this rifle has a break. But my biggest concern is barrel life. Can't seem to find someone that has a real good average round count with the 7mm wsm. Have search here and through the net and found saying anywhere from 1000rnds to a little over 3000rds. I planned on 180 bergers @ about 2900ish for the 7mm.

The rifle will be a do all long range hunting and eventually gonna try my hand at 1000 yd steel targets. And hoping to get me a suppressor with in the next year.

If you are gonna hunt with it get a 7 WSM, shoot the 1K steel first then LR hunting will not be as difficult.

Barrels are expendable. Treat it nice and don't overheat it and you'll see 1500-2K.

Re: Choice between 2 rifles 6.5x47 lapua or 7mm wsm

Thanks and just to clearify I don't big game hunt. Mostly coyotes and varmint, and don't plan on trying to drop a deer or anything of that size at 1000yds.

Thanks on the barrel life. I know barrel are just an expense but some were saying 800-1000rnds. That would be a little quick for my wants and needs.

Re: Choice between 2 rifles 6.5x47 lapua or 7mm wsm

They both sound great. If your looking to do LR shooting, the 7mm is a better choice with the higher BC bullets, and it's a magnum round as well. Since you have shot the 6.5x47L then I'm sure you already know that it is very capable of great 1000yd performance as well. If you reload then you probably already have quite a bit of 6.5 stuff and I'd say stick with it. If not, go 7mm as long as your ok with getting half the life span out of your barrel.

I spent quite a while asking myself the exact same question. In the end I went with the 6.5X47 for the lighter recoil, better brass, and longer barrel life. In retrospect I wish I would have gotten the 7mm WSM (or the 7 SAUM) for a little bit more range and more oomph downrange. I have been seeing numbers between 2,000 and 2,500 rounds of good barrel life. For me, barrel life isn't a concern as I am a rather low volume shooter. I could go shooting for an afternoon and fire three rounds and call it a productive day.

If I were in your shoes right now I'd pick the 7 WSM.

Yeah I have been looking and droolin over hill billy's 7 wsm since he posted it. Just had a really hard time scratchin the money together. So just gonna see where things go from here. Thanks for all the great input.

If you're deadset on a 7WSM, just be patient and you'll see one pop up on the FS section again. About a month ago there were a couple GAP 7WSMs being sold.

Re: Choice between 2 rifles 6.5x47 lapua or 7mm wsm

Yeah, I'm not going to get in to big of a hurry now. I'll keep watching and just see what pops up in the FS section. I liked the setup that hill billy with the defiance action and seekins dbm, seemed like a good deal to me.

But want to stay with a 6.5 such as 260, lapua, creedmoor, 7mm wsm, or saum. I talked to GA precision about a surgeon barreled action only. Then come up with a stock later. That would fit my budget.

Re: Choice between 2 rifles 6.5x47 lapua or 7mm wsm

hold out for a 7mm and i believe the 7mm SAUM is actualy a better round i have a short 22" barreled model7 for hunting and a Lawton with a 30" for comp shooting i am getting better velocity than the guys running the 7mmWSM's in 30" barrels and the Rem brass is actualy awsome and the Norma is great aswell. i have won 4 state titles at 1000, 1100 and 1200 yards in a row with the 7mm rem saum and shoot 20 shot strings and am getting 2500 rounds out of a barrel but am rechambering them at 1500 rounds.

Re: Choice between 2 rifles 6.5x47 lapua or 7mm wsm

Thanks wild bill. I have actually looked at the saum and thought it looked promising. My problem is that I don't have a lot of experience in these type calibers thats why I asked the questions I have. The 6.5x47 lapua, 308, and 233 are the ones I have used.

Re: Choice between 2 rifles 6.5x47 lapua or 7mm wsm

I've got a 7 WSM and a 6.5x47. The 7 hits steel with authority. But the barrel life and winchester/remington brass are the downside. With the 6.5x47 you get lapua brass and twice the barrel life as stated above. Both awesome calibers. The 7 has it slightly beat ballistically.
