Hello all,

I have several precision rifle builds that are in the 16 - 20 lbs range that are relatively unwieldy. What I am looking to do is build or find a rifle that is:

relatively lightweight 9-11 lbs
bolt action
detachable box magazines
effective up to 800 yards
.308
possible addition of a can (AAC or Surefire brake)
18"-20" barrel

The two I have come across so far are the:

Skunkworks Specter BABR

I like the specter because it is everything I want with the addition of integral BUIS which I think is a great idea. I am just not familiar with the company though I really like their products.

GAP Gladius

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2109886&#Post2109886

I like the Gladius because it is also everything that I am looking for though it does not have iron sights. I am familiar with their products, and have heard good things about them.

Can anyone make recommendations on these two rifles or any others they may have come across? I am looking to start this rifle about april of next year and want to do as much research as possible before then.

Thank you for your help.

Re: Choosing a Rifle

They are both top notch rifles from top notch builders. That skunkworks specter with a NFX 2.5-10 would be pretty sweet if you really want iron sights.

DeSnifter,
The GAP Gladius is a great little rifle and very handy. Lowlight has shown its capabilities numerous times out to 800 and 1000 yards. The SPECTER-BABR is a little different package than the Gladius, but the Skunkworks KUKRI is very similar to the Gladius. Same barrel length with a KUKRI specific contour and built on the Model 911 action. I could/would do a version of the KUKRI with the Skunkworks BUIS and save you a bit of money if you really wanted to go with the BUIS.

That BABR looks insanely awesome! I want one now

Looks like you've found your answer DeSnifter! You get exactly what you want and even save a few bucks. Sounds like the perfect deal to me.

Re: Choosing a Rifle

That does sound quite excellent! The more I look between GAP and Underground Skunkworks the more I am enticed by US's innovative products. The more and more I look at the BABR the more I want it...

Just curious, but are there any other major differences between the BABR and the KUKRI that aren't listed on the website? Also, what would you wager the relative weight and lengths of both rifles. Thank you for the response and help everyone!

One of my main reasons for wanting the BUIS is it would allow me to shoot the rifle while I saved up for the S&B.

DeSnifter,
The basic weight of the SPECTER-BABR without optics is 9 lbs 4 oz. With a 1.1-4 Short Dot mounted, it's just over 10 lbs. I'm finishing a run of KUKRI builds and haven't weighed any of them yet, but it should weigh about the same as the SPECTER.

The main differences between the KUKRI and SPECTER are the stock, action and barrel contour. The stock differences are all in the forend. The KUKRI is built on the "Compatible," the SPECTER is built on the "Military" and both barrel contours are unique to Skunkworks and unique to each build.

What I would do for a BUIS version of the KUKRI is build it on the "Military" action but still use the KUKRI contour barrel and MCS-T3. Both rifles feed from AICS and AW magazines.
