I have a stock Remington 700P with the 26" bbl. I believe it is the Heavy Varmint Contour. The bbl is rather thick. Being in the market for a bbl to put on the shelf for the future, could members advise as to what countour I would want to stick with? I really don't want to open up the stock for any fitting. Would also like to stay at 26", but a little longer would be ok I guess. Seems there are a few different types and styles that stump my shallow mind when I start sniffing around then I just lose interest. Any mfg that members care to endorse? Thanks, good luck and good shooting!

The Remington varmint contour is a very common offering from most barrel makers. So if you like the contour you currently have you could get the same one. You could leave it a little longer than 26" if you wanted too.

OK, so just call them and tell them that's what I got and want to keep it that way. But there have been some good deals here for barrels am I was not sure which style to choose if I were to buy one here from a members or such. My apologizes for not being clear on the subject.

Light Palma, medium Palma,Remington sendero, tubb contour are all roughly similar to the contour you have now. With the light Palma probably standing out from the group as being a little thinner and lighter.

Here's a good reference in terms of contours which includes: type (heavy sporter, MTU, medium palma, etc.), diameters, lengths, and weights.

Lots of info and specs there. I'm not sure if my measurements are supposed to be exactly as shown in the diagrams. Here's what I got so far having taken the action out of the stock for these measurements.

1.240" Just in front of the recoil lug. That is clearly the widest/thickest point on the bbl.
.950" Taken 4" away from the lug, it continues to taper down gradually to..
.830" At the muzzle

The whole thing is a real gradual taper without any sharp edges or shoulders.

Here are a couple I stumbled across:

Specifications: #1

Caliber: .308 Cal 5R
Twist: 1-11.25
Length: 26" Finished, Blank is 27"
Contour: #13 Rem. Varmint 1.25" x 2" Taper to 0.950" (4.65 lbs)
Bore/Groove: .299/.308

Specifications: #2

Caliber: .308 Cal 5R
Twist: 1-11.25

Contour: #14 1.20" x 3" Taper to 0.900" (6.20 lbs)

Specifications: #3

Caliber: .308 5R
Twist 1-10
Length: 26" Finished, Blank is 27"
Contour: #3 Sporter, 1.2" x 2.75" Taper to 0.67" (3.5lbs)
Bore/Groove: .300/.308

Specifications: #4

Caliber .308 5R
Twist 1-10
Length: 30" Finished, Blank is 31"
Contour: 1.250" x 5" Taper to .900
Bore/Groove: .300/.308

They are all Bartlein. The 1.240" on my bbl is a pinch smaller, and thats what I wonder about. Do they round up or are these actual measurements? Again, thank you for the advice.

Doug

The contour that matches yours is the first one, the #13 Remington Varmint profile. Don't get hung up on yours being 1.240" vs. 1.250" for the bartlein specs, .010" is within the margin of error for anything on a factory rifle. All the major makers produce barrels in that contour, Bartlein calls it the #13 while others call it the Remington Varmint or Remington Sendero. They're all the same contour, Remington uses that profile on many different rifles.
