chopping a savage 17 barrel?

Re: chopping a savage 17 barrel?

i had mine cut down to 16.25" so far accuracy is the same, lost a little muzzle velocity but not enough for me to cry about. The shorter barrel handles way better than before.

only exception is the muzzle blast is a little louder. If you're putting a can on it, it won't matter.

Re: chopping a savage 17 barrel?

out to 330 yards...it's the longest my local range has.

I don't notice any difference in elevation dope than when my barrel was longer, but at that distance I was never that consistent anyway. If I'm lucky I can hold 2 MOA at 330 yards. I can hit a pie plate for sure, but the wind and muzzle velocity variations sure don't help. Neither does shooting in 10 deg weather. When the weather gets warmer I'll do some better accuracy testing.

At 100 yards, Out of 10 shots 6 shots measured .6MOA horizontal and .5MOA Vertical and the overall 10 Shot group opened up to right around 1MOA with a few fliers. Most likely shooter induced.

Re: chopping a savage 17 barrel?

Yeah I'm the same way. My short game is pretty sweet, but out at 300 yards I've got nothing. I can hit a paper plate all day long, but that's pretty much all I can tell you. At 100 I am 1 MOA with 5 round groups, and about 1.5 with 10 round.

Thanks a lot for the info cause I've been thinking for a while about chopping mine for whatever length is best at 100. Glad to see it's producing some pretty sweet targets.
