I handloaded 4200 rds of .223 using mixed vintage once fired L.C. brass. About 25% of the brass from the 70's splits case necks & some rupture at the shoulder. I have separated the good headstamps, but still have 1000+ rds that have to be pulled.
The question- Can a chrome lined barrel fire this ammo and not wreck the chamber or throat in the process?

Re: Chrome lined barrel vs. split case necks

No , The gas pressure and heat would still damage a chrome lined barrel to some degree.
Old brass suffers from age hardening . If you had of annealed them all first down to just past the shoulder you would have saved many of them.
Very old brass is not worth the trouble and you are better off starting with new brass .
Once fired ex military stuff will usually have 50% of the cases with bent or damaged rims due to being fired in full auto weapons and may have been stored in dubious conditions for many years.
