I've always understood that CIP is a bit more generous with pressure than SAAMI.

You would need to know what standard the gun manufacturer is using, to rate their respective weapon, to know what's safe and what might be unsafe.

You don't really mention in detail, which weapon you're fretting over.

Every weapon is different and ultimately, you need to work up to find where 'over-pressure' begins to rear its ugly head.

Re: CIP VS SAAMI

I am not sure about SAMMI spec for pressure in firearms but CIP requires that weapons be tested to 125%(I think) over the approved pressure rating. That doesn't mean that they can shoot that all day long, but that they won't blow up at 125% pressure.

Use a reloading manual provided by the powder manufacturer and use components listed in that manual if you don't want to have to worry. Otherwise, do what all good reloaders do and WORK UP your loads from starting charges.

CIP is more generous in some cases, less so in others. Looking at QL sometimes they spec the same pressure or one may be a bit higher than the other.

Examples:

.44 Magnum CIP 40k SAAMI 36k

And one going the other way

.45 ACP CIP 18k SAAMI 21k

The difference is that SAAMI is the standard for this side of the ocean, and CIP is the standard for Europe. They each have their own OAL/maximum pressure guidelines and methods for measuring pressure and in some cartridges the difference is significant. One major difference has already been pointed out in this thread too. CIP REQUIRES a proof load that is a set % over maximum for that caliber is fired through a firearm before it is marked as such.

The SAAMI proof tests give a range of % ratios.
