So I've looked at the USO lens cleaning video and used lens pens, lens cleaning solutions, as well as other methods but just haven't been satisfied with any of these. They were either too complicated, too prone to damage, or not very easy to do.
I had an idea to share and am looking for flaws in the method. I shoot competitions in dusty environments often next to folks with muzzle brakes so the lenses get very dusty after a few outings and need some TLC. I'm looking to improve upon my current methods.
Since dust is the problem, rather than wiping it with a cloth with cleaning solution (which just rubs the grit across the lens), why not simply spray the inside of the objective lens with water from a spray bottle while the rifle is inverted and allow the water to drip onto the floor? This would capture and remove a good majority of the dust without any chance of scratching the lens by simple surface tension. From there, lightly dab a 100% pure cotton cloth (flat cotton, not terry cloth) to absorb any remaining water droplets and dust. Steam it up with your breath after that and use another clean 100% pure cotton cloth to give it a gentle wipe down. Done!
I've done it a few times now and have to say, I'm impressed with the results (and yes, this was done on some nice S&Bs). So are there any negatives to this that I'm overlooking?
