CMP Garand Grade

Service Grade means old parts and old stocks (they're running low on old stocks, so you may end up with a new one).

Special Grade means newly refinished parts, new stocks, and new barrels.

For a shooter just to have fun with? I'd grab a Service Grade gun all day long.

For competition or target shooting, I'd go with the Special Grade for the new barrel.

For me, I've got a Special Grade that I built at the CMP Custom Shop during one of their Advanced Maintenance Courses... outshoots me for sure.

The only thing available now is field grade. It looks like a lot of people sent their stimulus money to CMP. I was going to.

I would have recommended the Special grade for the new barrel and stock, $650. You couldn't touch the barrel for the price difference. A new barrel is $189 in the estore. So you end up at $839 for field grade and new barrel.

I wonder if we'll see more come up for sale. I think they might have some South Korean rifles in the warehouse still. I was looking at getting the Special grade for $650 and decided to go with an Autotrickler V3 instead.

Mine is a Springfield Armory service grade, purchased around 1995 from DCM for the princely sum of $250, with a 1953 Winchester arsenal rebarrel. It turns out to be a September 1940 build. It shot well; but after glassbedding, it shot to N/M standard without even having any of the N/M metalwork done.

I use my own handloads, directly out of the NRA Garand Reprint. Win Brass, WLR primer, Hornady 150gr #3037 FMJBT W/C, 50.9gr IMR-4064.

Do such rifles still exist? Since the return of the Philippine Garands, I think they do; but these days, prices are up.

On April 5th, Special Rack Grade was still $650. New Criterion Barrel, new Walnut stock, new web sling, refinished receiver.

This morning the only offering in stock is Field grade for $650.

Honestly by April 5th they probably had enough orders waiting in the mail to be out of stock. They closed the office in March and reopened mid May.

The store in talladega has rifles available. Springfield or Winchester Special is $1050. Looked at two IHC Service gauging 1,2 for $1080. Left with a special. Slim, but many available.
