COAL issue

Hey guys maybe I'm doing something wrong but here is my issue. I have a remmy 700 in 6.5x284. I'm using a stony point OAL gauge and when I chamber a round to the exact measurment I got from the gauge the round will not close and I'm stuck shortening the roand a few thousandths ata time till it does. What am I doing wrong? Or is the stony OAL just not that accurate and meant just to get you into the ball park?

Explain again how you get the measurement.

If you are using the guage that goes in the chamber with the blunt end to measure the max length of the chamber, the plug doesn't take into consideration the ogive of the bullet that your using. It's measuring to the lands. I prefer to do it a different way.

x2 what guage i use the hornady loc-n-load oal guage (formally stoney) i put what ever bullet i'm shooting in it place in the chamber then mic it for oal . but i also have the adapter to measure off the ogive of the bullet and thats what i seat the loads to the ogive oal

Its the hornady gauge. I use which ever bullet I plan to load slide the unit into the chamber and slowly extend till I hit resistance. I'm assuming the lands at that point. I tighten down the push rod and extract. I then place the bullet back in the gauge since the bullet usually sticks in the lands and measure from base of cartridge to the tip of the bullet. I then loaded a dummy round to that OAL and attempted to chamber and the bolt would not close. I had to shorten the round almost .05 in length to chamber. Is it possible the the modified case from hornandy is just that far off compared to my chamber?

hi get a black marker and mark the case on the shoulder i have encounted a lot of people doing the same as you the problem occour when the case is not actualy touching the shoulder in the chamber so the cartrige will be longer. if you mark the case then twist it in the chamber you will see where it is touching i think that it will be on the sides of the case. if you have bushing dies remove the bushing and size the modified case so it will have the same dimensions as the sized cases you have then it should seat nicely in the chamber and give you the correct readings.
