I have a Colt marked 14 1/2 “ M-4 upper marked “ COLT 223 “ on the left side of the receiver. Does any one have any info on this ?
Thanks for any help.

Never seen one marked like that myself, usually the upper just has the forging mark. A keyhole for them I think but I don't know about through the years.

Got a picture? Might help you get a better answer if someone more knowledgeable about Colt shit comes along.

Post a pic, the bad part about colt is after 2010 they increased their outsourcing and allot of their stand formats had changed.

I had a Colt marked upper like that but it was from a semi 16" rifle. I don't think, but you never say never with Colt, they ever built a 14.5" with that upper. Are you sure it isn't a parts upper? I think mine had a 16" HBar barrel on it.
I may have photos on another computer.

I dont think Colt would ship an upper with .223 on it with a barrel marked 5.56 NATO.

For what it's worth: Have you checked the front pin hole size? It may be a large pin Colt.

It has Colt-unique forge code marks, Colt proof marks stamped on the RH side, and the "COLT 223” reminds me of when they did the Colt 7.62x39 Sporter. When you see all of the marks you posted, you really narrow it down to it being a legit Colt upper.

Notice the Colt proof mark stamp:

Looks legit to me now that you posted the pictures. I’m more into the proof marks, codes, and stamps on 1960s-era and SP-1/Sporter II guns, and haven’t kept up in-detail on the 1990s-forward rifles, although I have seen a lot of samples as all these iterations have hit the market. I have a lot more confidence in the authenticity of that upper now, though I can’t say that the barrel and upper combo left Hartford that way.

Here’s an example of a Colt 7.62x39 upper similarly-stamped:

i have seen older A3’s stamped colt 223. I’m guessing there are no M4 cuts in the receiver?

Not a large pin , standard size.

Colt sold these "marked" uppers as complete upper assemblies back in the 1992-94 era. The 7.62x39 firing AR was a new thing at the time and some shooters were converting their 556/223 to that round so Colt sold complete factory uppers(this was new at the time for Colt to sell complete factory uppers) as spare parts. Trust me in the 1960s,70s or 80s you could not buy a complete Colt SP1 upper assembly.
