I will be buying one of their uppers with the Krieger barrel. I do have one question though..it can be purchased with either a 1-7 or a 1-7.7 twist. Which would be more beneficial if any for shooting mostly 77 smk along with a few 80 smk?

Thanks,
ALan

Re: Compass Lake service rifle AR

The 1:7.7 handles the 77's and 80's handily. I'm JUST getting into the SR game, but the guys at my club say the 1:7 is really to handle the 90s, which hardly anyone uses...not really sure why, I guess the 77s and 80s work better.

I bought an all up CLE SR with Krieger 1:7.7 this summer off the hide. It certainly outshoots me easily. Hopefully next summer I can start competing and make expert.

Re: Compass Lake service rifle AR

Thanks for the replies. I'm planning on putting this on a rock river nation match lower as I like their trigger on my rra 24" varmint. Any other suggestions for other lowers/trigger groups that may be better without a huge price increase?

Thanks,

Alan

When I was shooting some service rifle a few years ago the 90's were seated to long to fit in the magazines, so we were single loading them and hitting the bolt release each time. It was easier to just use 77's and 80's on the national match course. I haver heard that the AMU used the 90's to reach out to 1000 for a bit, not sure what they are doing now.

Re: Compass Lake service rifle AR

For SR it makes absolutely no difference.

The only difference is in barrel availability. Krieger runs more 7 twists than they do 7.7s.

Lowers - the only thing a different lower than your current RRA will do better than the RRA is remove money from your pocket.

I am not a fan of Frank's CLE reamer chamber. Have him put a Wylde in it.

Re: Compass Lake service rifle AR

I used Frank's uppers to achieve P100 and Distinguished. Krieger 7.7 inch twist barrels. His throat is "shorter" than the USAMU and Wylde throats, and 80 Sierra Mk load out to an AOL of 2.420 about 0.010 off the lands. This seems to provide a longer useful/accurate barrel life, as these long range loads are maxed out (and on the end of sanity...

) The USAMU throat is similar to the NATO SS109 throating, and the 80 Sierra MK will load to 2.500. I hope that this helps.

+1 Either twist works, but the 7 is only needed for 90 gr bullets..which nobody uses. My understanding is the 223 case does not have enough gas to propel the 90s fast enough to be better than the 80s. Also agree with the Wylde chamber recommendation
