Well… technically we sold them two entire armories about 1820…

British officers came over to see the American System of Manufacture at Springfield Armory. They went back to England, literally terrified at the production advances that the Americans had made in weapons manufacture. And sent representatives to actually buy the American system of manufacture.

The three band Enfield that they were making all the way up to the US Civil War were built on machines designed by and supplied by Americans.

The British know who makes the best weapons. Even though they still make a mighty fine sporting shotgun.

    Cheers.

    This x1000.

Eli Whitney is the patron saint of modern mass manufacturing. When he was an engineer at Springfield Armory and pulled off his legendary show by having several workers bring him crates all filled with jumbled parts for the Model 1795 muskets, and then proceeded to randomly pick out parts from the crates and assemble fully functional and ready for service guns in a manner of minutes, the spectacle shocked the international audience into complete silence. Every single part precision made to exact dimensions and tolerances allowing any piece to use any replacement part if it breaks. Instead of having to have the regimental blacksmith forge a new spring or hammer for a broken rifle, all that is required now is an inventory of essential springs and lockwork parts issued to every unit and constantly updated by the quartermaster officer. Broken guns are returned to service faster than a regimental band plays the morning tunes.

Everything that made the industrialized society we have today is owed to Eli Whitney's genius.

Whitney got the credit… as he had better publicists. And he did so a lot to contribute to the American System of Manufacturing.

But he faked his famous test (assemble musket for parts.). That credit goes to someone else whose name I can’t recall.

Book above is a great treatise on how it all came together! Highly recommended.

Most of it originated at Springfield Armory and at places like Lamson and Williams in Windsor, VT. The whole precision industry literally flowed down the Connecticut River to the trade center of NYC.

    Cheers! Sirhr
