I have a custom Remington 700 in 7mm STW that was built by John Van Dyke several years ago. It has a Shilen match barrel and Accurate Innovation stock. At the time it was built I requested a Badger Ordnance detachable box magazine for no other reason than I thought I needed it.

Through the course of finding the best load and seating depth for this rifle it became obvious that the loads the rifle liked were to long to fit in the magazine. I have been using it as a single shot for quite some time. Now in an attempt to squeeze some more accuracy out of this rifle and since I'm not using the magazine anyway, I'm thinking I should stiffen up the receiver and "block up" the magazine well.

I have been searching the internet for the correct part to insert into the mag well and have found this built by Kampfeld Custom

    40x

Has anyone used this and have an opinion on its success? Or are ther other options out there that I have not run across yet?

    Thanks

You do realize that the piece is welded to your receiver, then finished out. Thus permanently converting it to a single shot?

If I was going to go that way, then I would not spend the money on the custom work. I would just purchase a single shot aftermarket action.

If your rig doesn't do what you want it to do, then sell it and get something that does.

OR, rebarrel the rifle with a setup that will allow you to load to mag length.

Rechamber or rebuild. I can't personally see doing a conversion on a factory action. If you NEED to keep this combo, Karl will do a heck of a job with it. His work is very good and fast. I am pretty sure he is only doing barrel fluting and bolt jobs right now so he might not even be an option.

Re: Convert Remington 700 repeater to single shot.

Thanks for the input but don't get me wrong guys. I am pleased with the rifle and the way it shoots. It is sometimes awkward to shoot single shot with the mag lips sticking up and in the way. So a flat rail with no mag lips would be ideal. I also thought that filling in the mag well would stiffen the receiver and possibly improve accuracy even more.

I'm not looking to overhaul the rifle with new receiver or barrel. As far as welding in the mag well plug I have also heard that epoxy works just as well.

    Two more options for you.
Score Hi benchrest follower. Costs about $15.00 and fits on top of the follower. If your gun is a BDL, just open the floorplate and turn the gun upside down. Drop the follower in and close the floorplate. On an ADL you will have to remove the stock and then drop it in the mag well kinda duplicating what happens closing the BDL floorplate.
I have used these in the past and they work very well.

Option two is a Davidsons single shot feed ramp. It can be used kind of like the score Hi but it may need minor contouring on the outer edges so it is more work. I have two 6 BR's with this set-up and I have epoxied the ramps in place. They feed like a dream. If you would like to see what they look like installed, shoot me a PM with your cell number and I will take a pic or two for you to see.

Go with the davids follower. You can epoxy or glue it in, use it to feed your longer rounds, and if need be taken out for osmone who wants to use the mag if a rebarrel in the futre. There about 15$ from sinclair intl. They work great
