Hello everyone,

I have a M40A3 based rifle chambered in 300WM and I was wondering how hard/expensive it would be to convert it to 6.5x284mm Norma? And just how much more beneficial is the 6.5x284mm over the 300WM?

You will need a new barrel and a new bolt... as for benefits... I am with Texar2, I cant think of anything but recoil that a 6.5 bullet would do better than say a 30 caliber in 215 or 230g from berger could not do better.

Pathfinder,

Wes, here...

The 6.5 X .284 earned the name "fag mag" because it does what the .300 WM does without the recoil. You will shoot the 6.5 better because of that simple fact. I shoot both and defer to the 6.5 X .284 as the better cartridge. Certainly more "user" friendly...;-)

The .300 uses a .532" case head where the 6.5 X .284 uses the standard '06/.308 case head of .473". It's a rebated case, so they get lots of performance from it.

I would NOT modify your bolt on the .300...period. It's expensive and prone to failure IF it can be done at all. It would probably be cheaper to buy a new bolt from Pacific Precision. Personally, I'd leave it "as is" and buy a old or new Rem 700 action in .30/06 length. All that needs doing is re-barreling...at that point.

I'll guarantee you'll like the 6.5 X .284 better than the .300 WM

All for now. Give me a call if you want to chat. I sent you the number.

Wes

After reading your other post on the 300wm I think you are looking for a lighter rifle that recoils less.

The 6.5 X .284 will recoil less and how you set it up or build it will dictate the finale weight. If you go with any spec build with a M designation its going to be heavy... use a medium contour barrel such as remington varmint/sendero or medium palma and that will save about a pound compared to a m40/m24/mtu contour, stay away from anything when picking a stock that has heavy or sniper fill in the name and that will save you another half to three quarters of a pound, use high grade aluminum and/or titanium in place of steel on your scope base and rings and that will save up to another half pound... you just shaved off at least two pounds without compromising strength in a non-combat environment.

Also, if you are not concerned about changing the barrel every 1500-2500 that opens a lot of doors. It sounds like you reload already, may as well save some cash and look at the cheaper to shoot calibers such as those that use a 6mm bullet... 243, 6mm creedmoor, 6x47L, 6mm super LR, 6mm XC andI am sure there are many more... point is as a reloader then only caliber that has cheaper bullets is .224 calibers. Plus a pound of powder will stretch farther than it would with any of the 6’s than with the WM or 6.5x284... and be a short action saving a ounce or two more when allowing you to keep you cheek weld through the bolt stroke if that is still a concern...

Hey guys,

Wow I didn't know the 6.5x284 was a long-action. Also I've been looking at the ballistics for the 6.5x284 and see that it has significantly less kinetic energy than the 300WM. Yikes!

See I was hoping to improve upon my M40A3 by moving to a short-action M40A1. The short-action requires less hand movement when cycling the bolt which I really like. Also I wanted the new rifle to be lighter, recoil less and shoot flatter all without losing any killing power.

Now I don't know what to do...

Easy, connect with Jered again and have him install a fat or little bastard brake on your barrel and you'll have a lot less recoil, run berger 215's or 230's and you will have a poor mans 338... If your wanting a short action with performance close to the WM look at some of the 6.5mm, 7mm and 30cal short mags (WSM and RSAUM) and their wildcats, just be advised... There is no free lunch.
