I am looking to get rid of the j-lock on my 700 and wondering if I can attempt it with my hammer and punches or if I should have a smith do it? Any preference in aluminum or steel pins?
Thanks

+1

Make sure you purchase the whole assembly. The fp on the one with the key is a different length than a standard assy.

I also recommend getting a firing pin that's lightened (flutes cut out of the body) to give you a quicker lock time. I think it's only a few dollars more and worth it IMO.

PTG sells both. Plus they make the shroud in different colors.

+1 on buying a replacement.

I was unlucky on my purchase date, and had a rem with the J-lock and wanted to get rid of it. So I purchased a replacement assembly from Midway. With new parts in hand, I decided to try and remove the J-lock system from the old assembly. What I found is, you can't. The J-lock barrel cannot be removed and have a working firing pin assembly. And none of the parts are interchangeable between the J-lock firing pin assembly and the standard one.

Im going to get the fluted stainless model. They also have their DBM on sale for $100 w/o mag.
Thanks

So you bought one of these Callahan speedlock replacement assembly and it still would not work?

Re: Converting rem 700 firing pin assembly.

When did they start, or produce, the j-lock? I'm fairly new to remmys, but I got an aac-sd and have thought about changing the firing pin to speed things up. I'm curious as to see whether I have or don't have the lock. I'd also like to have that fancy side release added, but its not a necessity at the moment. Rifle is probably a year old or so and has the bolt release on the trigger. Sorry if I'm hijacking. Thanks, Jason

Re: Converting rem 700 firing pin assembly.

very nice link. Explained it well. I'm guessing in their talk of flyers with or without the j-lock, they would have been referring to a lock time issue and it sounds like the lock time issue was causing somebody not to follow through long enough with his shot and caused the flyers. I could be wrong, but that's what it sounds like. I see no reason why a j-lock vs non j-lock would have anything to do with accuracy when all other things are equal. Now the big question....do I want to get my rifle out of the safe just to look, as that would involve walking out to the garage and opening the safe!

So I did and I see no j-lock.
