Hey guys. New to the board here. My buddy and I are going to shoot in the Precision Rifle match in Cookeville TN in October. Just wondering if any of you guys have shot this match before and could tell me a little about it. I think I read we needed to bring 225rnds of ammo to the competition. Is that correct? Also, what is the general flow of the weekend?

Thanks in advance guys.

Re: Cookeville TN match

You most likely won't need 225 rounds due to the time limits on stages but bring them anyway. Be prepared to shoot off barricades standing, prone, sitting, kneeling, and who knows what else. Also be prepared possibly for a physical element. Last time on a stage we had to carry a stretcher with weights on it from the start box and then every position after. There was also a stage where we had to leapfrog our partners shooting targets along the way (favorite stage last two times BTW). Also there will be thinking stages so you and your partner will have to learn to make decisions and choose wisely.

You will have fun at the match regardless of how you shoot. Ryan and Scott, the guys who put on the match, are really cool guys and they set these matches up very well. Any team who can shoot well and communicate well will walk away with a good finish and have a blast in the process.

Here's a vid I took from the spring match. There's a couple more that I have on youtube under the same name if you want to get a glimpse of what to expect.

See you there in October!

Re: Cookeville TN match

I'm in my Cookeville hotel room now and can't wait to get out there tomorrow! I have heard that they make everyone eat bath salts before the match but that could just be a rumor.

Re: Cookeville TN match

I'm back up from bed after tossing and turning. We are headed that way on the morning.
Looking forward to a good match and for once. Nice (check) FUCKING GREAT weather.

Re: Cookeville TN match

Thanks for all of the information guys. Looks like I was expecting way fewer rounds fired. Is there an opportunity for me to recover all of my brass?

Re: Cookeville TN match

Don't listen to that Knight guy...he has no idea what the PTS match is like. He never even shoots it on match day. I, however, think it is one of the best matches around. Seriously, the guy you want to talk to is SSatt68, that guy is a bad ass. Even more seriously, the match is cooler than a cucumber. Bring the ammo they have listed on the website, listen to the RO's, pack accordingly for varying weather conditions in the fall, bring bug spray, bring a lunch, bring sun block, gun cleaning equip., and most of all bring a good attitude. The guys bust their humps to put on a great match, the last thing anyone wants to hear is whining.

Re: Cookeville TN match

Headed up today. Not looking forward to the long drive. It will take an hour and twenty minutes. But I actually gain an hour, so only really twenty minutes. Hate to rub it in for those having to a long way. But I am.

Joking aside. Can't wait to start shooting in the am. These guys run a hell of a match.

Re: Cookeville TN match

It's on of my favorite matches. Plus being only a little over an 1hr from my house doesn't hurt either.

Some stages there will be times you may get a chance to police brass and others not.

I always try to count on loosing brass..

I wouldn't listen to Greene, I caught him pulling bullets out of my loads and taking my brass"........jk. How are the rifles shooting?

Re: Cookeville TN match

Well, I fully expect to get my rear end handed to me in this match, but it will be a good learning experience I guess. I was amazed at the idea of shooting this many rounds in a day. Usually when I practice long range shooting I only go through about 50-60 rounds, so 225 seems like quite a lot of shooting!!! Can't wait though.

Re: Cookeville TN match

I feel the 225 rd count is just for padding in case you get really trigger happy and can blow thru all stages in record time. LOL

But I used 150-160rds during the PRS match of the 220 I took. So more than likely you will be taking some home. Its a great match and I am almost certain you will have a blast.

Re: Cookeville TN match

Good to know. I am really excited about it!! I really have no idea as to what to expect, so I am chalking this first one up to a learning experience. I have loaded 160 rnds this past week. Waiting on more brass to come in that is on backorder so I can get the rest done.
Are there stages where LRFs are prohibited and the shooter has to mil the distance?

Some might be and some might not be. Its a little early to speculate what the hamsters in Ryan's and Scott's brains are whirling up.
