My Dad has been a gun collector for most of his life and has/had a good many cool arms. There is a shop in town that purchases guns from estate sales all over GA and the owner will call my Dad when he runs across any pre64's, Parker's, LC Smiths, etc. and give him first go at them.
This particular day, he called Dad about a pre64 .308. When dad got there is wasn't in the condition he thought it would be so he past on it.
While he was there, he noticed a heavy barreled rifle in a monte carlo style stock and ask the owener if it was a .25-06. The owner said it was and it was a custom rifle by a guy that he'd never heard of.
My Dad said, "Is it stamped TC Kennon?" Shocked, the owner said, "Yes!"
Dad told the owner that the bolt, trigger and safety was incorrect. Also, the scope was missing.
The owner said, "I've never heard of this gunsmith before. How in the world do you know so much about him and the gun itself?"
Dad replied, "Because I had this gun custom built more than 35 years ago."
The owner told Dad, "Well, I've had it for 6 months and need to sell it. I've got $600 on it but you can have it for $250."
Dad bought the gun, took it home, broke it down and cleaned it, stuck a scope on it, worked up a load went to the range. First 5 shots at 100 were under an inch.
Dad looked at me and said, "I paid $1200 for this gun in the early 70's and this is when I was only making $100 a week. I saved up forever to have it built and then had to sell it to keep a roof over our heads. It shot great then and it shoots great now."
I told him, "Whether it shot good or not, I'd have paid $250 for the memory alone."
