Copper Creek Load Development Packs

I am interested in the idea of using this product to establish a load for my 6.5CM build.

My thought is to purchase 2 packs each of 3 different projectiles (TBD) to expand my data and find a custom load tailored for my setup.

Has anyone successfully selected a load using this or similar product?

I would greatly appreciate any advice on finding a custom load in a higher velocity node than most factory offerings, for a non-reloader.

Funny- I just ordered them today. I actually reload but I do not have the time to mess with it at all, so I figured I would give them a try. They seem great from what I have read. I asked them to load them a certain way and they are easy to work with.

@hitman, thanks for chiming in. I would really appreciate hearing your experience with the CCLDP.

Is your approach similar to mine in picking up a couple packs each for different projectiles? Or do you have an established bullet preference? Also, what’s your stance on COAL and Copper Creek’s involvement in determining/maintaining that length?

I will be posting about my experience with the .224 this summer... Almost have the rifle set up well enough to shoot the pack they sent. I might do different bullets if the 75 doesn't work out well enough.

Does anyone have a competitor to mention?

@Lowlight uses the Load Development Packs? Frank, if so, have you found these to be helpful and effective? And do you have any recommendations how to get the most benefit using them: specifically I’d like to “develop” loads for a light projectile and one for a heavy?

I guess they have the two version where the first is different charge weights and the second is the various seating depths. I asked them to load them close to MK262 with 77 SMK. My rifle loves the Federal FC262 and it shoot the stock Copper Creek around .7". I did not crono them but everything I read says they usually have single digit SD. So, my hope way that if they can match the Federal accuracy or better then I can have them with much better SD than factory loads. I guess once you know the exact load you can do the second phase where the load is the same but diff. OAL.

I may go that route with my Tikka Tac but that rifle shoots FGMM under 1/2" anyway and that is pretty cheap when you can find it on sale.

Early on in my reloading days I chased groups too much. So, know when I find a load that shoots around 1/2" I do not mess with it anymore at all. I am hoping the first kit will get me there without having to mess with OAL at all. I will post the results when I get them in.

@hitman, your approach makes a lot of sense. Practicality vs. potentially drowning in minutiae is an interesting balance that can tend to tip toward the latter; if your approach isn’t somewhat predefined.

I become a perfectionist while shooting, to the point of sometimes not enjoying the day because my groups are not as tight as my best. This is refreshing to read, thanks for giving wisdom from the perspective of experience.

Trust me I did the same thing and if I do not catch myself I still will! It was a buddy of mine who said every time we go to the range it seems like you are testing out new loads! It hit me- I was! I had a good friend who is a very accomplished competition shooter and he was the same way. He said a 1/4" gun or a 1/2" are irrelevant because after 300 yds there are so many variables that will not allow you to hold that. Otherwise a 1/4" gun would be a 2" group at 800 yds! I have never shot that and never will. But there is definitely something to be said for trying to find the best load with the lowest SD. with good fps. I reload very little now actually just so I do not get too focused on the reloading part vs shooting. I have a ne Tikka Tac A1x that shoots FGMM under 1/2" and as much as I want to see if I can tighten it up I will likely buy a 1,000 rds of GMM and call it!

I've done one of his load packages before. Problem was I got in to reloading and tried to copy everything but it didn't work out.

Found out that my lot of gunpowder was a lot hotter than his... He was loading 42gr, I had to drop down to 40.8

That’s an interesting point: if you were to use their LD Pack and they went on to switch lots, I guess you’d be damned to start over?

Wonder if they’d guarantee/notify lot changes and discount future LD packs, to keep you in the X-ring?

That is a good question. In my experience lot changes on powder make the biggest difference. Changes in brass, bullts, primers etc, I don't see much change
