Ok i searched my ass of off on the internet for a good cooper solvent. I settled for KG-12 as its water based and won't damage any of the other metals in a fire arm. May i just say this stuff kicks ass ... I used it on a rifle I'm trying to bring back to life. 1 wet patch let it sit for 5 min ran a second wet and the copper was gone ... hit it with a 3rd just to be sure then a rinse with Hoppe's and dry patches.

NOW THE BIG DEBATE, break in or don't break in

When breaking in do you remove all copper after each shot or just power the residue.

should i just shoot the dam rifle and if its no good go back clean all the copper then break in.It would stand to reason any burnishing that didn't get done to begin with could be done after the fact with a clean copper free barrel.

So many different opinions what are the facts has no one been able to get scientific data on this yet.

Let the gun tell you. Take a few shots, than look at the bore. This is the best way to tell if your tube is in need of a break in. If its got heavy copper fowling, clean it thoroughly, do a "break in" (tons of techniques out there) If it doesn't look bad, shoot a few more. "Breaking in" is a debate because not all barrels are the same, some fowl more than others (so its "necessary" for some barrels, while not others- main source of debate).

Factory barrel that is generally rough I will break in....nothing crazy though. Custom barrel from respected name that is lapped.....just shoot it. Don't think about cleaning it until accuracy drops off.

I hope you are not using KG-12 on a Remington with the XCR finish. It is a proven fact KG-12 will ruin an XCR finish. Take it right off. Believe me, I learned the hard way.

Re: Copper Solvent KG-12, Brake-in

Actually thanks for the reminder, before i purchased it i did call the company. He did mention a specific Remington finish that didn't react well, the barrel is apparently coated in copper then the finish is applied. The KG12 was eating the copper away under the coating or something to that effect.

I'm using it on basic blued and stainless barbells the 5R which is bead blasted stainless unless i'm mistaken.
