However, they look like just a bunch of dorks who never grew up or have found an interesting way of socializing, sort of like a counter-culture.

The rule of thumb seems to be Nerdy guys who will NEVER get laid, and Hot women. A target rich environment.
Look up "Cami" a character from a fighting game, who has some very good cos-players, and a few bad ones, and also look up "Tinkerbelle" (yes that one) who has two or three very good re-enacters.
Depends on your taste of course, but pretty strange stuff. I have a neighbor who is deeply into this stuff so she has some interesting costumes. Ahem.

I had heard the term on here somewhere, then saw this on Yahoo, and awondered WTF.

Nerdy guys and rich women....never thought of myself as a nerd but if it will get me laid by a GOOD LOOKING rich woman, with a possible weeklly stipend, well, one never knows....

Imagine all the folks that dress up for comicon, or a Star Trek/Wars convention, all cosplay. Some folks take it more seriously than others.
