lookin at doing a rebarrel. was wondering what length of barrel is a sweet spot for a creedmoor. Prefering a shorter barrel (less than 26")since it will be for hunting. bullet will more than likely be 129gr sst's
what length?
what twist?
Thanks

Re: creedmoor barrel length?

Twist rate of either 1/8 or 1/8.5 will work.
24 inch is a good length for combination use. 26 inch should get you a little more velocity. Mine is 24 and would not consider going any longer. Don't believe I have seen any shorter than 22 in here.

Re: creedmoor barrel length?

28 inches will allow you to get the most out of the 6.5 Creedmoor!

Re: creedmoor barrel length?

I went with a 26" 8 twist on my savage. I shoot the hornady match 140gr (when I can find them in stock), but it also shoots the 120gr stuff very well.

With the factory load of 41.5 of 4350 and 140 A-Max bullets getting out to 1,000 meters takes less than 10mil in a 24 inch barreled bolt gun.

This is with a 100 meter 0.
A 24 inch barrel should serve you well for a hunting style rifle.

Re: creedmoor barrel length?

If you are planning on shooting any of the new GMX rounds you better be sure you have enough twist in that barrel. The bullets are kinda long for weight and at least a 1/8 is needed. Sometimes a 1/7 is what it takes. Rob01 may be able to give you a bit more detail on that. For sure don't go less than 1/8 on the twist though.

Re: creedmoor barrel length?

8 twist will be perfect. It's what we use with the 140s and works great. Shoots the lighter bullets very well also.

Re: creedmoor barrel length?

No I haven't. I use the target bullets as I don't hunt with the rifle. That said I would be very surprised if an 8 twist won't stabilize them.
