February 22nd, 2022 will be a day we were reminded to keep life in perspective and never take for granted the things we have; good, bad, and all the in between. Mike was sitting at his desk dealing with the trials of the day— Server Issues, the website not functioning as it should and the phones ringing off the hook—when he answered the next phone call that came in. It was a call that reminded him that even when you think you are dealing with the worst, someone else is dealing with something even more life altering. The phone call was from a customer and fellow member of the NCPPRC by the name of Kevin. He informed Mike he had been diagnosed with Brain Cancer and was in need of selling his Spartan Rifle. We here in the firearms industry take care of our own, though, and Mike decided instead of selling the rifle for him, he wanted to do a raffle for it with 100% of the proceeds to go to Kevin and his family.
On February 28th, Kevin came in to our office with the rifle and told us his story. Kevin first joined the NCPPRC in 2015. He was the guy that always showed up early to help set up, and always stayed late to help tear down. He was eager to learn and improve and that is really what the NCPPRC is all about: sharing knowledge and skills to improve the group as a whole. It was through this group of shooters that he learned about Spartan Rifles and had to get his hands on one. He drove down there personally to order one and when he got it, it was his pride and joy.
Sadly, his competition shooting career came to a halt in 2020 when he had a seizure. In April he was diagnosed with Left Ureter Cancer and thankfully he was able to beat it. After he had a second Seizure in November of 2020, Kevin was diagnosed with the brain cancer. The Doctors call it Glioblastoma Multiforme (or GBM), and though they did not give him a time frame of life expectancy, they did say it is terminal. He continued to shoot for the joy of the sport for as long as he could, but one of the effects the cancer has on his body is it can cause Hernias which have made it very difficult for him to carry the long rifles. He continues to shoot pistols with his friends whenever he is able, as firearms are such an integral part of his life.
We were curious if the doctors had attributed his cancer to something specific, and Kevin told us that he did have a gene mutation called Lynch Syndrome that was a hereditary gene he inherited from his mother that can cause him to be more susceptible to cancer, but the doctors only attribute a small percentage to that. He also told us being a firefighter for 25 years inhaling all the smoke and carcinogens probably contributed to the cancer as well and he is currently in the process of talking with the doctors about that.
We asked him how he is handling all that is going on in his life, and he was in better spirits than we could have imagined considering the news of his repeated battle with Cancer. He is grateful to God for every day he has to spend with his loving wife Robyn, and two teenagers Rachel and Caleb. He attributes still being alive today to his surgeons who were able to remove a good 70% of the tumor, God, and the medical equipment he wears. He took off his hat to show us a series of wires and bandages on his head that he wears constantly. He told us it is called Optune Therapy and it works by using electric fields (called TTFs which stands for Tumor Treating Fields) to disrupt the cancer cell division. He told us his previous two scans showed no new growth and we are all praying the scan he has coming up will continue the good news.
