Hello everyone,
I am new to the Sniper's Hide community, and I have a general question that maybe a few people could add some insight on.

Within the next year I am thinking of buying a new gun for long range shooting. I have hunted my entire life and have always been accustomed to using my Remington Model 788 .243, and I have always been a bolt action kind of guy.

I am now torn between two different selections, either upgrading to a .308 bolt action, or possibly getting an AR-15 and adding a free floating barrel, and a decent scope to the weapon, along with matching a good ammo round that stays consistent. The AR-15 really appeals to me as the platform of the weapon is very versatile and doesn't break the wallet.

From what I have read so far, people are making great shots at 600 yards like its nothing with the AR-15. So I would like some insight as to everyone's opinion on this matter.

I am wanting to be able to hit targets at 500-700 yards, I know this will take time and practice, but I feel keeping a consistent prone or bench position when shooting, along with being able to compensate for wind, drop, and carrying the knowledge of proper breathing technique, gun rest and other factors will make this weapon a great choice.

Thank you!

Yea the .243 is awesome, its a very flat shooting gun, it is very capable of reaching out and hitting targets at the ranges I want. I guess I am just wanting to add another gun to the collection.

A precision oriented AR15 can be a lot of fun to shoot. Gets to be a lot more fun once you get into that 700-800 yard territory as the wind starts to really work its magic. Fun and fairly cheap per shot if you are reloading, though it's very easy to shoot a lot more than you would with a bolt gun.

Then you should consider a 6.5 Grendel for your AR15 pursuits at that type of range. I use mine for hunting to 800 yds for Idaho grey wolf. Outside of your wildcat 6MMs that's the easiest cartridge to shoot at distance out of the AR15 platform IMO. Do note that most people getting the type of accuracy you're referring to are also using high end, quality optics. Definitely recommend factoring that aspect into your budget...
