Hey guys,

Been researching custom actions for my first match rifle build. Just what I can see far as features(wanting 700 clone action close to 1000$) appearances, price etc I'm thinking between:

Lone Peak Razor

Stiller, Predator or Tac.

Defiance , Tenacity or Rebel.

I know that bighorn is a great action also and a big name right now in custom actions. However dont need interchangeable bolt heads or CRF. Id like just a 700 design that has a M16 extractor essentially.

I know there's other great actions too but either arent what I'm looking for or plain unavailable. The 3 companies I mentioned have either their actions for sale in stock places now or in case of lone peak less than a month wait time.

This leads me to a few questions on the ones I'm considering. It seems stiller is one of the less talked about in custom actions now days. Why is that? People seem to say they are the lower end of custom actions also. Though it seems in my understanding getting into custom actions is splitting hairs differences !

What I like about Lone Peak is the coated bolt , so id have a bit different look than straight stainless. Also heard great things about them. Stiller similar looking to Lone Peak but no integrated lug and the concerns I mentioned going around. Tac 30 being coated be great then just would coat the barrel. Any others id just run a stainless look. I have several stainless looking rifles so may want something different.

Anyhow any thoughts, experience or insights be appreciated . thanks !

I would not disqualify the Bighorn because of too many features. I don’t need heated/cooled leather seats, moonroof etc in my truck either but it sure is nice for the same price.

The bighorn can be had nitrided, which would color it black. Dang good action. Absolutely love mine. The lone peak comes with a nitrided bolt(not a coating), and for a very reasonable up charge, you can have the receiver itself nitrided. Of the three you mentioned I’d pick the Razor in a heartbeat.

Just picked up mine yesterday, Defiance Rebel with integral lug. The workmanship and quality makes this worth every penny. I called Defiance with a bunch of questions a while back and they way they were excellent to deal with, I was sold after that.

Look at impact. My actions have went Savage, Stiller, defiance, impact.

That's certainly a good option if the OP wants to increase his price range. So is the LP Fuzion (the big brother to the Razor). Personally I would take the Fuzion over the Impact, but there's not a bad choice to be made between the two.

@lange92, to answer your question on Stiller, they just don't feel as good of quality as the other actions. Rough machining, and the Stiller actions I've had my hands on have felt pretty "gritty". Like you took a Defiance action and threw a handful of sand in the action gritty. I was pretty unimpressed with every Stiller I've handled.

For the more "budget" options, I think between the Bighorn Origin, Defiance Tenacity or the Kelbly Atlas Tactical you can't go wrong. With the Lone Peak Razor, it looks like you have to buy a base separately, which you will have to factor in for cost. At that point I would seriously start considering the Lone Peak Fuzion, which is a damn good action.
