I've been researching AR10s for paper punching from 600-1200 yds and I'm looking for some recommendations on a custom manufacturer and possibly a custom caliber, other than .308. My range is a 600 yd max. range, but I have a 1200 yd range down the road, so mostly 600 yd competition with the once or twice a year 1200 yd range shooting. Would like to see sub moa accuracy with 1/2-3/4 moa ideal. Will also use for some long range hog hunting, but mostly competition and I do handload.

I'm thinking I would like to go with a 300 WSM or some other caliber with a higher velocity. I'm just not sure on the reliability of feeding of these short magnum rounds and I've heard the heavier high BC bullets don't allow for enough poweder in these short magnum cases. Any experiences out there regarding these issues?

Also, looking for recommendations on builders to discuss these issues and options? Any recommendations on a caliber that shoots relatively flat, available with high BC bullets and will fit in a standard DPMS or Armalite magazine, without major adjustments?

Also, if available, looking for a rifle with a piston gas system option.

Plenty of top notch smiths roaming around here.

Some tamer, but still long range capable chamberings for you to think about: .243/AI, .260/AI, 6.5CM, 6.5x47L, 6-6.5x47L

Do you reload?

Yes, mostly reloading .223/5.56 for AR15 platform, also reload .40 SW and 9mm luger. Looking to expand into the large rifle primer.

Do any of these manufacturers build a piston driven rifle? I like the idea of keeping the gases out of the receiver, if possible.

Re: Custom AR10 Builder Recommendations

if you are wanting something like that, i think the best route to go is get a POF, LWRC or some of the piston guns then ship it out to the smith of your choice and have him slap a new tube in whatever caliber you want. You could probably save some money if you went with a Direct Impengment system over piston. To tell the truth not many people abuse AR platforms to need a piston driven system, DI will be just fine

Re: Custom AR10 Builder Recommendations

Thanks, I am also looking for advice in this build and if there is no loss of accuracy due to the gases and and burned powder being directly vented back into the receiver than I am not opposed to the typical gas impingement action. I don't necessarily need this to be 1/4 moa, just looking for 3/4 moa or less of course, less is better.

Are there any custom builders out there known for custom calibered, match AR10 platforms? I know there are quite a few that offer bolt guns, which I will be looking for a custom bolt gun in .300RUM in the future, but for now, I would like a fairly accuract .300WSM AR style rifle.
