"Custom"

Is anyone else sick of seeing the word "custom" on every other gun for sale in the classifieds?

If I buy a stock Mossberg 500 and add an aftermarket choke it's "custom". So what?

Just list what you have and what's been tweaked.
The word's meaning has been watered down until it's useless.

/thanks for your time

Re: "Custom"

It's going to the same "dead horse adjective box" right along with it's good buddy "tactical" to where it will mean absolutely: ZERO

I view custom as being a true one-of-a-kind piece specifically tailored to the size, preferences, and desired aesthetic features of the owner. Adding an aftermarket part should not be considered "custom".

Re: "Custom"

When I sell mine I will list it as Homemade. Now THAT will set it apart from these "custom" rifles.
Picture001-2.jpg

Homemade rifle, (not 4 sale)
Surgeon 591 action
Remington Trigger (unsafe at any speed)
Kreiger barrel 24inch 1:10 twist threaded 5/8-24
Surgeon Trirail
McM A5 with adjustable cheek
Harris bipod with podloc
USO SN-3
Chambered with PTG .308 Match reamer

Price. I guess I could figure it up, but what it amounts to is more than anyone would want to pay for a rifle.

Re: "Custom"

A gun is not "custom" unless the gun has been torn down and put back together by a quality gunsmith making the gun more accurate and reliable using top tier products. Or by blue printing a action.

Ar15's can be the exception to that rule. I would call my Ar custom do to the fact you cannot buy my Ar15 in any store. However I would never call my SPS tactical custom. Although yes it has a aftermarket stock which is glass bedded trigger etc. I would say my SPS has been customized but is not "Custom". Clear as mud?

I respectfully disagree.
My AR is a combination of various parts collected over time.
It's a mongrel, not a custom.

Re: "Custom"

"Custom" does not automatically equate to "quality." As Boone said, a quality gunsmith is what adds the value. A hack can put all the Gucci parts together and wind up with a sparkley, steaming turd. Instead of being a hammer, it winds up being an expensive parts gun.

Me too, but it's a .30-30 and not for sale.

As far as the OP, I think what you're talking about is the difference between custom and customized. IMO, to be truly custom something has to be pretty much 1 of 1. At the same time I can understand when someone uses the term custom to describe a gun that's had a lot of parts swapped out. In this case, while it technically began life as a mass produced model the owner changed it to his or her liking which could be considered custom... Wait a minute, now I've confused myself.

Never Mind that minor detail. The important question is, "Is It Multicam?" That's where the real value lies.

Can I get an Ayyyy-Men!!!!

Re: "Custom"

to me "custom" means something done by smith A or individual B not normally seen or done to your everyday firearm. Everything tucker is talking about to me is "enhanced", or "accurized" or "upgraded" and in no way "custom". an example to my definition of custom is something along the lines of......

I am going to tactically modify this custom thread by saying his one of a kind Savage has a HUGE BMW below each post he has.
