I wanna do some work to my Rem 700 .308. This is what it is now.

As is,

Rem 700 Varmint, 26inch heavy factory barrel
Bedded in McMillan HTG
Stock bottom metal

What I would like to do,

Cut and re-crown barrel to 20inch and switch to a McMillan A5.

Here is my dilemma, I shoot .5MOA with it as is, the previous owner shot .25MOA with it. If I cut the barrel what are the chances of it still shooting like this? I would hate to screw this up by cutting the barrel.

Re: Cut barrel to 20"?

Cutting the barrel, if done right, shouldn't mess with accuracy but like mentioned you will lose a little velocity.

Why you dumping the HTG? Excellent all around stock. My favorite stock of Mcmillan's.

Re: Cut barrel to 20"?

huntinaz,

Might have your dad chamber a dummy rnd in the SPS Tactical or take a set on no/go guages with him when he picks up the SPS 223 Tactical, to make sure the head space is correct. Been a lot of problems here lately with this 223 Rem. model.

Take it for what it is.

Huntinaz go for it. If you need a good smith let me know. If not when you get done come on down and shoot with us. You will be fine chopping the bbl to 20" if it shot before it will still shoot. 1/4 or 1/2 minute who cares most targets are at least a minute where I shoot and believe me. There are bigger problems theb my 1/2 minute KMW

Re: Cut barrel to 20"?

Just from my own weapon, bought it new, had to polish the extactor, even cut a couple of coils off the spring that is under the( not sure of the correct name)extractor plunger in the bolt, helped, but that didnt fix all the problems, going to have my gunsmith fix the chamber headspace issue for me, easier than sending it back to Rem. Was merely suggesting he check it with some head space guages before he walks out door with it.
