I been working on an older 700 (made in 1969) and noticed the top of the action has a square cut-out that my newer 700 do not have. Looks like you could top feed something through an opening like this.

Is this anything special or just another variation of the 700 action?

Looks like its cut to far back for a stripper clip guide.
Is it a long action or a short action? i heard of guys that shot a long action for high power cut out for a block to make it a shorter throw but they still could load the cartridge OAL and still fit in the box. or it could have been cut out for a base like what chandler rifles used to do.

Re: Cut-out in top of M700 action

Its a long action made in 1969 and was made the way it is from the factory. My Uncle purchased it new at a local sporting goods store and I inherited it when he passed a few years back.

The picture maybe does not show it but the top cut-out matches up with the one for the magazine. It is an ADL rifle not a BDL.

Re: Cut-out in top of M700 action

Had to satisfy my curiousity, pulled out one of my rifles looks pretty much like the square cut on my early SA's, googled it and saw similar square cuts on long actions as well. Its not actually a clip slot per say, apparently Remington cut these for an afermarket product they were going to sell. SDWhirlwind, Dennis here on the Hide knows a lot more on the topic and perhaps even the accessory that fitted there.

Completely Factory, I have a 223 BF one that came from around the same timeframe.

Re: Cut-out in top of M700 action

Its a factory "clip slotted" 700 receiver. Had a couple, and as I recall the M40 was a clip slot, but not the M24. Just a variant. Nothing crazy or odd here.

Re: Cut-out in top of M700 action

Thanks for the comments...interesting info as none of my other 700's have this, makes it a little more unique as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Cut-out in top of M700 action

It is a cut-out for a bolt on stripper clip guide as apposed to the guide that were machined into the receiver on Springfields, Enfield 1917's, 40X repeaters etc. Not rare in this era.

Good luck

I think the picture above shows the screw holes in the side.

Re: Cut-out in top of M700 action

Funny you should put it that way...Yes, there are two holes on the LH side that I wondered what they were for. They have factory slot head plug screws in them.

Re: Cut-out in top of M700 action

Before CNC Remington would do most of the machining from one side
so the top cut matches the bottom. The screw hole on the side are for a receiver sight like the Redfield or Lyman.
