Re: Cutting a fluted barrel. help
I'm going to assume you mean an 1.250" straight barrel. Measure the depth of the flutes. If they are not more than .125" deep then I would think you would be safe. Peak pressure is reached when the bullet is 5-6" down the barrel in a round that size. On most fluted barrels the bullet would be under the flutes anyway. I'm holding a 338-378 Wby factory barrel in my hand. 4.5" down the barrel the diameter is .890" with a flute depth of about .075". That leaves .740" less .338" for .402" and a wall thickness of .201" on each side. That sounds scary as hell when you do the math. Now if you're talking about cutting the barrel off short enough that you are turning the flutes off to make the tenon, interupted cuts aren't much fun. Take it off the muzzle end. Easier to cut and crown than turn down.
