Really considering one but 457's are scarce, 455's not so much. I know there are a couple of differences.
Functionally and accuracy-wise, is there a downside to going with the 455? It looks like it may be a while before the 457's become readily available.

The barrels are the same. Buy the cheapest 457 you can find and swap for a heavier barrel. At ones and varmints are plentiful on gunbroker, as is the precision trainer. MTR is a bit hard to find but they do pop up.

I did get on order a 457 Varmint with the wooden stock. The stock isn't really a big deal since this is a range/plinking rifle. If I feel the need to upgrade the stock, I can always do that later, but I'm not infatuated with the chassis systems, so the wood stock will probably do well. I just wanted a 457 because of the new enhancements. Right now, I'll just put some good glass on it and shoot it.
Since this is a 100 yard Max rifle at this time, will a standard MOA scope rail work or will I need to gp with something with some elevation?

455 and 457 barrels ARE NOT the same. Longer tenon on the 457.. just so someone doesnt read this and think they can install a 455 barrel on a 457 or vice versa...

Buy the cheapest 457 you can find and get a Bartlein barrel for it. Then you'll have a tack driver.

I thought 455 and 457 barrels are interchangeable. Or is this only with regards to aftermarket barrels that work with both (Lilja sells the same barrel for 455 and 457)?

Lilja uses shims.. they are not drop in. You have to headspace them with shims.

The 455/457 group buy I ran a few months back we machined them to exact headspace and those measurements were different from 455 to 457.

I would wait, nothing new is going to be made for the 455 accessory wise, not while it's discontinued anyways.

They aren't super readily available but they aren't super hard to get either, push to fire safety and not having to pull the trigger sold me.

Unless it was a realllly good deal I wouldn't buy into a discontinued platform.
