I'm looking at buying a dpms 308 and just looking for some answers.

Will they accept the magpul mags?
Has anyone had to change out the buffers or springs to make them run better?
Are they worth the money or should a guy just buy a lwrc or an arma lite, or something more in that $2,000 or better range?

I've had a few different AR 15 but never an auto in a 308 please let me know what you guys are thinking!

yes, dpms will take 308 pmag

no, never had to change out a dpms spring

currently, to get anything better than a dpms like LMT, LWRC, or whatever you are going to have a hell of a time finding one, and second the price will be around or just north of 3k price range. Maybe even close to 4k until all this crap blows over... Prices might be back to normal if no more sandy hook nut jobs happen, or Feinstein long lost gun control nut sister takes her place once she kicks the bucket.

if you're looking for something under 2k in a 308,,, then you have about 2 options. dpms or rock river. I've owned both dpms and rock river and have never had any problems and they are both great rifles. both have advantages and disadvantages. dpms would have an edge in compatibility of parts and can take pmags.... rock river would have an edge in accuracy but not by much and can NOT take pmags in 308 cal. My rock river EOP is just as accurate as my LMT, but then again im comparing a 223 to 308. Thing is with DPMS, you either get lucky with a very accurate rifle, or just an OK rifle type of thing.

this 308 rock river was just up for sale on Kentucky gun company for $1500 with free shipping, but it just sold. This is actually an OK price and was about $1350ish before shit hit the fan a few months ago.

Really, no matter what you do with a 308 semi AR, with glass like 4-16x50 with mount, it is going to be a heavy bitch over 10lb.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a friend has a dpms in 308 with the a2 front post and the thing shot better than my remington sendero out of the box. I saw that link on another thread. I'm new to the ar thing as far as rebarreling. Can a guy change out the barrel to a brux or bartlien or anything like that?

you will have better luck doing custom work with a dpms than a rock river I think (might want to ask someone else on this one).... If you think you might spend over 3k doing custom work to a stock dpms,,,, then just get a LMT, Larue, or GAP and be done with it. LOL. My LMT is a friggen TANK, but she is one hell of a shooter... My LMT is 100% sub-moa rifle especially with reloaded AMAX bullets. She is a beast and very impressive for a chrome lined barrel... It should last a LONG time. Slap a vortex pst FFP 4-16x50 scope on it and you will be happier than a pig in shit.

if you want to do it right, then take this advice if you don't mind spending around 3k for a nice 308 rifle. Or just wait and hope prices go down if nothing else goes crazy in our nation.

go to this link and set up auto email notification on the LMT that you like... Just make sure you're ready to purchase ASAP and get your FFL figured out before hand so you can breeze thru the purchase process as the rifle will not be up for sale that long:

I have a 20" chrome lined and it is awesome... many others on SH getting good results with the 16" chrome lined. Both are still under 3k if they ever go back on sale. Cross your fingers. I got my 20"CL LMT MWS for $2499 with free shipping if that gives you an idea. Many would give their first born to have a LMT @ that price again.

I'm a large frame AR nut. I have built about 9 of them. The nice thing about the DPMS base rifles is you can really upgrade them easily. Barrel, Free float rail, triggers, stocks you name it. The receivers and the BCG's are the hardest parts to find but there is always a market for the take off parts. My first was a DPMS Oracle several years ago. It shot great out of the box but I upgraded it with a Troy rail, Fulton Armory Criterion barrel, Geiselle trigger and PRS stock. Was a lights out shooter and still well under the price of an Larue or LWRC. I've now gone all Mega and other billet customs. My current long range rifle is a Mega Maten MKM in .260 Remington with a Lilja 20" barrel. I would put that rifle against anything out there no matter what the cost. I also have a Mega Maten and an SI Defense in .308. The overall quality of the Mega, JD, SI Defense and other billet receivers is lightyears ahead of the standard forged DPMS/RRA stuff. Especially if your into precision long range. But if cost is an issue then you really can't go wrong with a DPMS if your just starting out. But once your shoot the large frame AR's your going to be hooked. I sold every bolt rifle I own including my AI. One of the issues though is magazines. They are stupid expensive these days and hard to get but you only need a few really. I will have one of my .308 Mega and SI Defense up for sale soon since I want to build another MKM. The Monolithic Key Mod from Mega is the cats azz so I have to build another one!
