I am trying to mount a Daniel Defense RIS 2 (M4) rail. This is my first DD rail system so I'm not positive, but I think something is defiantly out of spec. When I install the bolt up plate and torque down the bolt up barrel nut to 50 foot pounds, the bolt up plate still turns freely. Then when I try to line up all the bolt holes with the rail, I can only get one and sometimes two cap screws to line up. I took it apart and put just the bolt up plate to the rail and tried to get all the cap screws in, and same thing; the bolt up plate screw holes are not lining up with the rail screw holes. I've tried to change the alignment of the bolt up plate, but I cannot see any other possible way to install it that allows the gas tube, ejection port cover rod, and all screw holes to line up. Anybody have a problem with the DD rails not lining up properly. I am a little suspicious that this was a return, because when I opened it up I noted some marks on the screws, like this had been mounted before.

Here I have two screw caps in, see that none of the other holes are lining up.

Re: Daniel Defense RIS 2 problems

So this is my fix; I picked up the Troy 12 inch MRF rail with front sight post cut out for $229, that's $170 less than I paid for the DD RIS 2. Not only is it rock solid, but it was way less complicated to install. It also came out of the box free of defects and scratches. I guess that just because you spend an extra $170.00 doesn't always mean you are going to get a better product.

Thanks Troy for making quality parts and keeping your prices very reasonable.

Re: Daniel Defense RIS 2 problems

Yeah, I was surprised too. I always thought DD had a good reputation. Needless to say I was very disappointed. The Troy is just a little heavier, but to save $170 I can live with a couple extra ounces. The Troy also came in great condition, where as the DD looked like it had already been mounted and beat up. Rainier Arms said that is typical of most DD RIS rails because they get thrown in a cage for Government contracts.

Re: Daniel Defense RIS 2 problems

Rainier Arms emailed me today and informed me that Daniel Defense had done some special run for Gemtech, and somehow that is why the bolt up plate had been out of spec, and the rail all dinged up. They are still sending me out a new DD RIS 2. I'm not sure if I will keep that one or not, so if your interested in a DD RIS 2 keep watching the options and accessories list, you may find mine on there.
