Im pretty new to shooting centerfire rifle, especially at longer ranges.

Anyway, Im trying to save some money here in case I dont like it.lol

I have found a used Rem 700 VTR ( triangle barrel ) in .308 that has been put into a HS police stock. ( factory stock comes with it )
It has a EGW 20 moa rail, Harris Bipod, Cheek pad, and some Burris Tacticle rings.

The seller wants $700 for the setup. 150-200 rounds fired.

On paper it doesnt look bad. How about in the real world ?

What say the experts....

Re: Deal or no deal

I'm not that familiar with that particular Remington so I went to GB. Looks like that's an average price for that rifle. You're not stealing it. I personally never liked that funky barrel. FWIW...

Re: Deal or no deal

I would say no deal, keeps searching for a good deal or negotiate him to drop the price a tad. For example could save money if the rings don't fit your scope.

Re: Deal or no deal

I say deal. If it wasnt in an HS stock I'd say no. But that sounds like a decent deal, and you can sell the original stock for $40 to make back some money. That stock new is $300, the bipod is between 80-125, and the rings and base are $75. That's like buying the accessories and then finding a stock vtr for $250. Worst case you shoot it. Get bored, or don't like it and put it back to stock and sell it. Then sell off the other parts individually. You won't lose any money.

Re: Deal or no deal

The thing about triangle barrel are not as sturdy as a normal contour barrel is. I have seen some decent reports from these rifles, but personally I would look for a standard bull barrel rifle.

Re: Deal or no deal

Get a Remington 700 5R Milspec new. If you decide it isn't for you. you won't lose much if you decide to sell it. I'm guessing you will love and keep it.

This was my origional thought. At least around here these rifles are getting blown out. My local shop has the same base rifle for $550.
I figured $40 for the rail, $40 for the rings, $75 for the Bipod, then the $300 stock.
It would cost me $455 for the extras + $550 for the rifle to build new.

I may go ahead and do it. I spent an hour getting him down to $700.
I even showed him $650 in cash and he wasnt dropping from the $700.

I read a ton of posts on the barrels here.
Im more confused than when I started now.

Re: Deal or no deal

It's not a bad deal, but not a smokin deal either, providing that you like the stock it is in, and you can do a face to face and not have to pay tax on it.
Having a few hundred rounds down the pipe is not a strike against it, she's just getting broke in for you.

Re: Deal or no deal

Deal, you can always shoot the barrel out and rebarrel after you've
some had trigger time with it and decide to step up to a custom build.
you already have a decent stock and receiver to work with.

OK. If he will throw in 2 cans of Krylon Ill take it...lol

Re: Deal or no deal

Do some more research on what you want in a rifle. While the total price ain't bad, you may not like the bipod height or cheek rest, and would duplicate the savings on trading that stuff out. Kind of skeptical that somebody would buy a new rifle, switch out the stock, and then sell it with only 200 rounds fired if it was that sweet of a shooter. And if you like shooting at all (hence the bug to buy a rifle, and join a site like this) you will become addicted to shooting centerfire in no time. Good deals come along fairly regularly, don't jump on the first one and be sorry later.

Re: Deal or no deal

I shoot every single week.
I just shoot tons of rimfire. Mostly at 100 yds with a Kimber 82G or my Browning 52 sporter.

I have access to shoot out past 600 yds at least monthly but have never gone as I dodnt have a rifle capable.

This one isnt going anywhere soon. Its not advertised etc...

He shoots a pretty expensive rifle ( or I would guess as its in an AICS chassis ). It sounded as though the rifle in question was for a wife that doesnt like it. I just didnt want to mention that Im thinking of buying a girls gun...lol

As far as signing a waiver, hopefully my CCW will do.

+2 on the 5R. I picked one up two years ago and it shoots better than i can. I haven't put a load through it that it wont shoot. So far i have put 155gr scenar handloads, Black Hills 168gr SMK, and now Berger 175gr BTHP handloads, all sub-MOA. It's the perfect starter setup to me. It will give you plenty of rifle to continue on till you feel the need to upgrade.

Re: Deal or no deal

I have a Rem700 with the triangle barrel I bought off a friend. Been shooting with it for almost a year and with the knowledge I've got from SH I've shot some pretty nice groups and been out to 600 with it, bagged some coyotes and I like the way it shoots. Seems like a good deal, I went for it and I'm hooked.

...now I've bought a Rock 5R 11.27tw from Greg here on the Hide to rebarrel it and get some serious time behind the trigger. Never like the way the triangle barrel looked but it did it's job.

I also agree with this. It is the best factory Remington.

Where would I find one of these ?
I looked a little at my usual window shopping sites and found nothing...
