I'm sure this has been asked, and I've been reading back and forth on many options, but I'd appreciate some input here. I've narrowed down my round choice, and I'm looking for something in 7mm RM. What are my options? I wish the 10FP Precision came in the 7mm, even in the WSM, but I can only find it in .308. Is there a Rem 700 in a 7mm or is that short action only, as well? Would it be unereasonable to buy the 10FP and re-barrel for the 7mm WSM? I'd like to find a base rifle for =< $2K. I'm prepred to reload, and my goal is not competition, but to learn and be proficient at 1K m shooting for my own personal accomplishment. I have a couple of precision built AR10's, but would also like to add a good bolt gun to the arsenal.
Thanks for any input.

Why don't you buy a stock of your choice, a Savage action from Jim Briggs, a prefit 7mmRM barrel, and you put everything together by yourself.
You're looking at about $700 plus the price of your chosen stock.
Or, if you like the M700 path ...

Re: Decisions decisions...LR Bolt gun, which one...

A quick search at GunBroker turned up six (6) Remington Senderos in 7mm Rem Mag, ranging in price from $750 to right at $1K. Get a used Sendero and get as much scope as you can afford. Load, shoot, repeat.

LOL...you make this seem too simple. Guess that's why I asked.
Thanks guys...I'll look at these options.
What about the Savage 111 action in 7RM? Any input there?

Re: Decisions decisions...LR Bolt gun, which one...

Savage 110, 111, or whatever 3 number actions will work - you just might need a magnum bolt head. If you like the Savage system, then haunt your pawn shops until you find a good base action, get a stock you like (google Joel Russo, he makes laminate wood copies of the McM A5) and watch Pac-Nor's "Ready to Ship" feature for a pre-fit barrel.

The 7mm Rem Mag may be "old school" but it is proven. Any issues with throat length and so forth have been worked out long ago. It may not be as sexy as a SAUM or WSM but your chances of getting into a really good solid rifle without destroying your budget are much better.

Let us know how you roll on this.

Re: Decisions decisions...LR Bolt gun, which one...

Thanks for that...With the Rem Sendero's, I see stainless fluted barrels, and heavy steel barrels. Which would be best? Not worried about weight, strictly accuracty. My guess would be the heavier steel barrel.
I don't have enough experience to know Savage from Rem, just that they seem to be the two everyoone talks about. This gives me a lot more info to go on though. I really appreciate the input.
ETA:...please, I don't want to start e "Rem vs. Savage" debate here...I know where that usually ends up...

Re: Decisions decisions...LR Bolt gun, which one...

Both the chrome-moly and stainless steel Sendero barrels are the same profile. In fact, the rifles are identical except for whether or not they are stainless vs blued steel. I would go with whichever I could find at the best price.

Savages are very user-friendly and can be altered by the owner with very few tools and with excellent results. The Remington system is the most prolific and owns the accessory market.

Either one will serve you well.

Re: Decisions decisions...LR Bolt gun, which one...

I've been warned about Remington's head space and general quality issues...any input there? Also, what about Sako's A7 series platform?

Re: Decisions decisions...LR Bolt gun, which one...

I would go with the Rem action. You know 7mm barrel are prone to burn so be suspect when buying used. Eventually you're going to rebarrel.

Re: Decisions decisions...LR Bolt gun, which one...

Any input on the Sako A7 platform? Would this be a good action to build on? Will any of the tactical stocks accept the Sako action?

Re: Decisions decisions...LR Bolt gun, which one...

Why not buy the 10fp and re-barrel to 7-08? you'll have the advantage of using the Hi-BC Hornady 162gr A-Max, and burn less powder then the 7mm Mag. And as you probably know the 7mm mag is a long action round.

+1 on the Rem Sendero if you don't want to do anything except pull it out of the box and shoot it. If you want to rebarrel, go Savage or even with a custom action.

Re: Decisions decisions...LR Bolt gun, which one...

Well, after giving this some reasonable thought and asking lots of questions, I'm pretty sure I've decided to try and find a TRG-S to build on. I'm just not an "off the shelf" kind of guy, and I've heard nothing but high praise for the M995 action. I know it'll take a little longer to get where I want to be, but in the end, it'll be well worth it. Besides, I need another project.
