Gunsmithing Determining height of sights over bore?

Any one here know of a couple of books or web sites that would provide a practical explanation of this mystery.?
For example,iF I want to mount Ar 15 sights on a bolt action rifle ,or a Ruger Mini 14 rifle (custom of course),where would you start figuring?
I have googled several word combos to no avail,so what do you do mount a front sight and then figure the rear hieght or ??????
