hi guys I'm loading hornady eldx .308 bullets using a rcbs competition seater die that I modified the seater stem to accept the longer bullets (as I was having inconsistent OAL lengths because it was hitting the tip before the ogive of the bullet.)

I thought I blended it enough but now that I'm loading with a compressed load of imr 4064 I'm getting a ring around the ogive of the bullet, as I'm guessing the seater stem doesnt have enough surface area for the force of seating.)

how would u guys sand the ridge out of the seater stem to give it more surface area to seat the bullet?

Sandpaper would also work well. Walmart sells a "Polishing" pack that contains 1,500, 2,000, 2,500 grit sandpaper as well as a 3,000 grit polishing pad. I use the pack to put mirror finishes on the chambers I cut. I cannot imagine that they would not do the same to a seater.

Have you thought about just buying the vld seat etem? Solves a lot of issues on it's own.

I will try the sandpaper. i have an order in to rcbs for the custom seating stem, but I dont have time for them to make it and get it back to me before I take the class with Frank in Minnesota at the end of august

Just get a Vld stem. I hate that their competition seater doesn’t come with one. I had to purchase one for 6.5cm. I’ve fixed seating stems with bullet/lapping compound but never tried non-vld to fit a vld.

I found a set of brand new rcbs gold medal dies for .308 that have the vld seater stem. palmetto state armory must have messed up the price because they are selling them for $50 plus free shipping right now. part number 15505

I havent got them as I just ordered them but yes they are the right part number and description just wrong picture. I called and verified before I ordered. they have other calibers for way less than anyone else as well
