Since the DPMS scavenges its gas mid length instead of rifle I have lower velocities than most.

So my simple question was this. M118LR shoots around 2480 fps, yet BH shoots like 2400 flat. I have a plethora of BH at my house in 175, but was wondering if Federal GMM is any hotter, or uses faster burning powder than BH. I think the 18" pipe may be needing fast burning powder to get the FPS up!

thanks!

Re: Diff ammo in SASS

FWIW, I recently chronographed either Federal GMM 168 or Hornady Match 168 (I'm sorry I cannot remember) and they ranged from about 2,485 to 2,505 fps in my DPMS SASS.

I apologize I can't remember which, but it was one or the other.

I plan to go again this weekend with FGMM 168 SMK and 175 SMK and plan to chrono again. This time writing it all down.

IME, the slower powders that give top velocities in longer barrels also give the fastest velocities in the shorter barrels too.

If by "scavenges" gas you mean the velocity effect of the gas port--have a friend shut off a gas port and see just how awesome the velocity increase is. For *any* gas port position. Return and report.
