Here's my dilemma. I have a remington 5r milspec 308. I love this gun but i want to do something custom. I was thinking about buying an sps tactical to play around with for a little while then have it sent to a smith for re-barreling, truing, etc. The only reason in buying the sps is that i want to leave my 5r how it is. Just wondering what you guys think and see if i'm crazy for wanting 2 308 caliber bolt guns.

Re: Dilemma

After its all done and over, your going to end up shooting one way more than the other. One of them will be your favorite. Then, your left with a gun sitting in the safe that you spent your cash on when you could have spent that on customizing the rifle you already had or buying ammo. Yeah, in theory it's a great plan, but trust me it never works out. I know from experience.

It's your money...

Re: Dilemma

It seems like you have reasons why you want to leave the 5R the way it is. But honestly you wont be saving money by not customizing the 5R and buying a SPS. You are not crazy for wanting two .308's... Have you seen people on this site?

^^^^ Trevor is VERY wise, I have had the same plan and ended up with an extra gun I never shot.

+1

Do you want a heavier contour barrel than what you have on the 5r? Why don't you want to true the action in the 5r?

I got five in that caliber. And yes, you will have a favorite that you shoot all the time while the others sit in the safe.

Re: Dilemma

My 5r shoots well so really don't see any reason to fix what isn't broken. Just wanted the sps to customize. I guess I will think a little more on it. I could use it to build a 260 like Exhogflyer suggests. Thanks for the advice keep it coming. Also like others i have plenty of guns that get neglected in the safe. Mostly just guns that where passed down by my dad. Guess I need to stay away from my local gun shop and stop picking up the sps.

Re: Dilemma

My main problem is when I "customized" my 5r I had all these parts left (stock, DBM, trigger, etc) that I was going to sell to help pay off the modifications. Well, looked at all those parts and thought all I really need is a action and I'd have a nice rifle to sell. Something different than .308 would be nice so I bought a cheap SPS in 7-08 (so the DBM would work) I love the thing so I'm going to keep it but now I've got more parts, maybe a .260?
