So I'm working up test loads for a new Grendel and my comp die is denting the bullets. I want to reshape the seater but can't get to it without taking it apart. Does anyone have any idea if/how I can disassemble this apart without messing it up? Here's a pic of the die and the dented bullet. (It's matte because it's hBN coated

It's nearly impossible to see but you can see the lines where the hBN was worn off and you can feel it easily. It's a dent around the circumference just shy of the ogive from the seater being at a more obtuse angle than the bullet. The die was obviously made with the idea that people wouldn't be loading such pointy bullets, so I just want to pull the seater part and re-contour it to match the profile of the pointier bullets I shoot (123SMK).

Re: Disassemble Redding Comp seater die?

Damn it, I just looked-over my 55 grain V-Max bullets that I seated using the Competition Seater die and they are all showing a rim indented right above the ogive. WTF? Flaw design? I'm calling Redding first thing Monday.

Re: Disassemble Redding Comp seater die?

Y'all need to get the Redding VLD seater stem. My .223 and .243 dies were both causing the same ring on 75 and 105 A-Max until I replaced the stem.
Sinclair has (had?) them for sround $18.
I called Redding and they won't just replace it; you have to buy it.

Maybe worse news is that right after I bought my stems they disappeared from the site, but a brand new micrometer VLD head appeared for $40-something bucks.

Screw that, I was a machinist for years. I'm just going to tear it apart and re-couture the seater for free.

Thanks for the info though. So I assume that by selling the VLD seater that it's pretty easy to pull apart?

Re: Disassemble Redding Comp seater die?

The dies are easy to disassemble.
My question is, is that a Redding competition seater die?
Is it new, or quite old, it sure doesn't look like any of the ones I have, there is no nut on top.

My 223 die dented v-max bullets also, but would not dent a ballistic tip, I just thought it was jacket thickness. Please let me know if the vld stem cures your problems.

Yes, just screw the top off and pull the seater right out.

I think you might be right.

It's brand new right out of the mail from MidwayUSA about 4 days ago but I screwed up it's a Forester not a Redding. Good eye.

Yeah you're right, I have so many I thought this one was a Redding but it is a Forester.
