Received a free box of hornady 185gr jhp bullets for the 45acp. Load data in Hodgdon reolading guide states for a jswc 6.4 grains of clays universal = 977 fps.(Never Exceed Loads Listed In This Publication) is in bold at bottom of page. The jug of clays universal says for a jswc 7.2 = 993 fps. Curiously the jug also states reduce loads by 10% which would be 6.4. I find it hard to believe that .7 grains of powder only changes the velocity by 16 fps. Anyone got any other data or tried this load. And NO dont suggest another powder Im not gonna buy it.

What are you using the ammo for? If it is plinking then does being at max load really matter? I would use 6.4gr as a max load and work up to it. I personally only carry factory loads, and plink with the ammo I load.

got it free for buying some dies. Just going to load it and shoot it. I dont use 185gr normally I use 200gr lead for target and 230gr for live target. Yea Im thinkin 6.4 also but just suprised at the differences considering Hodgdon is publishing both sources.

Yeah it is a little surprising. I checked Hodgden's website and they also showed 6.4gr as the max charge.

Published load data did not come down from the mountain with Moses.
The variation in load books year to year and brand to brand is the result of the unscientific process of lawyered up committees agreeing on fashionable trends in hand load recipes.

Here is me working up loads for 185 gr 45acp, notice the wide range of powder charges:
0) 45 acp....................... 185 gr. 7.6 gr AA#5 jams w/stock Patriot spring
1) 45 acp........................185 gr 10.2 gr AA#5 1100 fps 18,000psi
