I was looking at purchasing a moving target for a home range and got sticker shock. Does anyone have any recommendations for companies that sell a somewhat inexpensive option or ideas on how to build one ourselves?

You can use an RC car to move around a target or put one on top of the RC car. worst case scenario, you hit the RC car and are out a couple bucks.

at the end of the day, you always have an RC car to mess around with and terrorize the pets/kids/GF/wife with.

Do you have power at your range? If so, I know several ranges that have successfully used garage door openers /w remote. Reverse direction is done using counterweights.

I rigged up three movers. They are a bit labor intensive with only one person shooting but super cheap.
Stretch wire between two trees or maybe a couple posts if you don’t have trees. Run wire at 2-4% grade depending on speed you want. Anchor a 12”+ bracket above the wire on high side to that bracket you put a steel flip target so bottom of target weight rests on the wire.
Then put a double pulley with at least 12-18” of hose or belt material and bolt on steel target.
The idea is to shoot the flip target which releases the runner it is usually up to speed by the time you are cycled and locked up. Depending on how far your wire goes you can get multiple shots.
So the lessons I learned from the first few attempts: make sure mover is at least 12-18” under wire because you will clip wire eventually if it is too close.
Make sure bracket that flipper rests on is heavy duty and 12” away as well for the same reason.
Make several because walking down to reset every time is annoying...or set up by a pit and your buddy can take turns shooting and resetting.
